♻️ Don’t Trash It—Drop It Off!

If you have household products labeled toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive—such as batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint, pesticides, drain cleaners, or flea and tick products—take extra care when storing and disposing of them.

These items should not go in the trash. Instead, bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility for safe disposal.

The Novato HHW facility is open four days each month for residential drop-off. Dates and times may vary, so please check the calendar for up-to-date information.

No appointment required for Novato residents.
Businesses, please call 415-892-7344.

🗑️ The Most Important Item in Your Bathroom Might Surprise You

Flushing something down the toilet is not an alternative to throwing it away. Some personal care items may seem like they belong in the toilet, but don't be fooled.

The toilet was designed to carry away human waste and toilet paper. Items such as wipes, tampons, pads, applicators, condoms, dental floss, cotton swabs, tissues, and cotton balls may disappear after you flush, but they don't disappear from the sewer system.

These items can cause costly clogs in your home's plumbing and contribute to serious sewer backups in the community.

A small, lined and covered bathroom trash can near the toilet may be the most important fixture in your bathroom. It provides a convenient and discreet place for personal care items that don't belong in the sewer system.

When in doubt, toss it out. 🚽➡️🗑️

👉

A Healthy Sewer System is Essential for Protecting Public Health and the Environment. Everything we pour down our sinks and drains and flush down our toilets travels through our home plumbing to the sewer main and can cause problems along the way:

💧 Wastewater Becomes a Valuable Resource

Every drop of water that goes down a sink, shower, or toilet begins a new journey. At Novato Sanitary District, wastewater is carefully treated and transformed into a valuable resource.

Each year, the District recycles and reclaims about 550 million gallons of treated wastewater. Recycled water helps irrigate parks, schools, and other landscapes. Reclaimed water supports 800 acres of pastureland where cattle graze and replenishes the District's wildlife pond, which attracts nearly 50 bird species.

Fun Fact: Nearly 40% of the District's dry-weather wastewater flow is beneficially reused, a level achieved by only a small number of Bay Area communities. 💧🌿
