Norwood Police was honored to be a part of this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Massachusetts. SRO Rooney and Officer McDonough represented the Norwood Police Department in this year’s LETR, joining the Cruiser Convoy alongside agencies from across the state. The LETR for Special Olympics is the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for Special Olympics, having raised more than one billion dollars worldwide. Through local fundraising events such as the Polar Plunge and Dodgeball Tournament, both of which NPD proudly participated in, Special Olympics Massachusetts raised $1.3 million this past year, with Norwood Police earning recognition as the top fundraising team at the Polar Plunge.

The LETR is a year-round fundraising and awareness building program, designed to empower members of the law enforcement community to support Special Olympics athletes who live, work, and compete in their local communities. The individual agencies and LETR community members have been essential to propelling the mission and impact of Special Olympics across Massachusetts.

The officers were honored to be apart of the ceremony to include speaking with the athletes and their families as well as presenting medals to the athletes.

On the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day, we remember and honor the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and determination of the U.S. and Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Their bravery helped change the course of history and secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

We extend our gratitude to all who served and to those who continue to serve our nation.

Disabled Parking: Know the Rules

Disabled parking spaces and placards help ensure accessibility for those who need them. Misuse of a placard or parking space can result in significant fines and penalties.

DO:
• Display your placard properly when parked in a disabled parking space.
• Park only in designated disabled parking spaces.
• Lock your vehicle and secure your placard.
• Follow all parking rules and regulations.
• Return expired or canceled placards to the RMV.

DO NOT:
• Drive with your placard hanging from the rearview mirror.
• Allow others to use your disabled parking privileges.
• Park in cross-hatched access aisles (zebra stripes).
• Use a placard if you are not entering or exiting the vehicle.
• Leave your placard in an unlocked vehicle.
• Use an expired placard.

Please take a moment to review the graphic for additional information. By following the rules, we can help keep accessible parking available for those who rely on it every day.

This week, all sworn officers are completing recertification training for Taser and less-lethal munitions launchers. Officers also participated in defensive tactics exercises as part of baton refresher training.

This training is designed to ensure officers have the knowledge, judgment, and practical skills necessary to respond to a wide range of situations safely and effectively. Regular training is critical to ensure officers can make informed decisions under stress and utilize the most appropriate response when dealing with individuals who may pose a danger to themselves, the public, or responding officers.

Ongoing training in less-lethal options provides officers with additional alternatives that can help resolve incidents safely while reducing the likelihood of more serious outcomes. Continuous training and evaluation also help ensure officers remain proficient, accountable, and prepared to serve the community.

Instructors for this training included Sergeant Baker and Officers Valzovano, Bishop, and Jennings.

As many of you know, last night the Norwood Police Department issued a Silver Alert for a missing 77-year-old resident who had walked away from the Ellis Rehabilitation Center.

Cases involving elderly individuals, particularly those who may be suffering from cognitive impairment or other medical conditions, can have tragic outcomes. Fortunately, thanks to the swift response and coordinated efforts of our officers, METRO officers, supervisors, dispatchers, K9 teams, drone operators, mutual aid partners, and the assistance of the public, Mr. Mayo was located safely.

I want to personally thank everyone who responded, searched, coordinated resources, and remained committed throughout the evening. The professionalism, teamwork, and dedication displayed by all involved are a reflection of the values of this department and our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.

I also want to thank the METRO search teams that came to Norwood to assist.

These incidents remind us that every call matters and that our collective efforts can make a significant difference in someone's life. Last night's outcome was the result of outstanding police work and collaboration.

The video below is shot from one of our drones that was donated by the Simoni foundation and shows the officers coming out of the woods with the lost senior.

Thank you all for a job well done.
