Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Veterans, Highlights Role of Fate in Military Service
Chaska, MN – A solemn yet inspiring Memorial Day ceremony took place at Veteran’s Park in Chaska, MN, on May 26, 2025, drawing a large crowd to pay tribute to those who have served. The event, led by American Legion Post 57 Commander Gary VanEyll, featured a poignant keynote address by Richard Stolz, Past Commander and current 1st Vice Commander of Edward Born American Legion Post 343 of Norwood Young America.
Stolz’s speech offered a thought-provoking reflection on the role of chance in military service, emphasizing how duty assignments and deployments are often dictated by circumstance rather than personal choice. He highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of those who served in logistical and support roles, reinforcing their indispensable role in sustaining combat operations.
Drawing from his own experience, Stolz recalled his unexpected shift in deployment orders—from an anticipated assignment in Vietnam handling explosives to a classified nuclear mission in Germany. His specialized training led him to a top-secret unit tasked with handling tactical nuclear devices, bypassing NATO’s command structure and reporting directly to the Pentagon.
“It’s remarkable that a young man from Young America, MN, was trained for the direct detonation of nuclear weapons,” Stolz said, describing the secrecy surrounding his unit, known as Green Light Teams. His mission had no extraction plan—just one order: deploy and detonate.
As the ceremony neared its conclusion, Chaska American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57 President Jennifer Stolz placed a traditional poppy on the memorial gravesite, while Commander VanEyll solemnly read the names of veterans who passed away in the last year.
To close the tribute, all veterans in attendance were invited to stand on the platform as the audience erupted into heartfelt applause. The event ended with a moving rendition of "TAPS," played by the bugler, echoing throughout the park—a fitting end to a day of remembrance and reflection
