📖 Snippets of Norwich History 📖

Did you know that one of the most innovative surgeons of the Revolutionary War was born right here in Norwich? Born in 1740, Dr. Philip Turner was orphaned at a young age and adopted by local physician Dr. Elisha Tracy, under whom he learned medicine while traveling throughout Eastern Connecticut.
Turner served as a surgeon during the French and Indian War before joining the Continental Army.

During the Revolutionary War, he treated wounded soldiers at Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston - and pioneered a groundbreaking technique to save wounded soldiers’ legs from amputation.

He also played a key role in combating the devastating smallpox epidemic, helping design and implement the Continental Army’s compulsory inoculation program. The program dramatically reduced smallpox deaths among troops.

🩺 From Norwich to the battlefield, Dr. Philip Turner left a lasting mark on American medicine and military history.
