Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County Launches Free "Regional Navigator" Webinar Series

Free, virtual event that provides information on accessing, conserving, using, and leasing land

BINGHAMTON, NY — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County invites farmers, landowners, and individuals across New York State of all experience levels to attend a biweekly webinar series running noon to 1 p.m. starting Oct. 6 and ending Dec. 1. The schedule for the series is as follows:

Oct. 6 - “Agricultural Assessment” with NYS Office of Real Property
Oct. 20 - “Land Use Zoning Explained” with Pace University
Nov. 3 - “Land Conservation Programs Overview” with Upper Susquehanna Coalition, Broome County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Otsego Land Trust
Nov. 17 - “Designing a Land Lease for You” with Sam Rose (Cornell Small Farms Program)
Dec. 1 - “Accessing State or County Owned Land” with Todd Hyman of Hylight Farms, NYS Office of General Services, Finger Lakes National Forest Grazing Program, and Wesley Daisley of Ontario County Department of Public Works
Note: Some sessions may run longer than the allotted time, depending on content. Individuals may select any or all of the sessions they wish to attend.

This webinar series will provide individuals with practical information about accessing, conserving, using, and leasing land. The overall goal of this series is to help participants make more informed land-use decisions, identify resources, and better understand opportunities around increasing access to, and conserving, agricultural land. Professionals statewide will offer useful information as well as participate in a Question-and-Answer session at the end of each webinar. Prepare your questions and come ready to learn!

The Grow, Cook, Serve programs are generously funded by the United Way of Mid Rural New York, Inc.. On September 9, Master Food Preserver Rebecca Hargrave led a canning workshop where participants made a mild salsa that turned out delicious. Staff even had the opportunity to sample the extra salsa that did not fit in the canner, and it was a hit with everyone at lunch. Canning salsa is an excellent way to preserve the abundance of fresh tomatoes available this time of year while creating a flavorful product to enjoy later.

We had such a large interest, we hosted another Spiced Blueberry Jam canning class led by Kirsten Spears of Fox Trail Farm!! We had several youth join in to learn the process of doing jam. It was a great time had by all!

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, Monday night's canning class was a great success!

Participants learned the process of safely pressure canning vegetables, including the importance of following proper food preservation guidelines to ensure safe, high-quality results. Everyone had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build confidence in preserving their harvests at home.

On Monday evening, we hosted a Spiced Blueberry Jam canning class led by Kirsten Spears of Fox Trail Farm. As we prepared this simple and delicious recipe, the kitchen filled with the wonderful aroma of blueberries and warm spices!

One of the best parts of the evening was hearing several participants share that the recipe was so easy to follow that they feel confident making it at home. Helping community members build skills and confidence in the kitchen is exactly what these classes are all about.
