Happy Sunday!! Here is a reminder from your Norwich Firefighters to help us protect our community with fire safety. Tomorrow starts the NYS burn ban until May 14th. This means no open burning unless it is a small, contained camp fire. Preferably covered in a enclosed fire pit to prevent spreading. The good news, with the beautiful weather that we have been experiencing lately, you can still cook out on a grill. However, we ask that you do not burn yard debris or have bonfires. Fires can quickly spread out of control into grass and wooded areas. This also means to be mindful of smoking materials and ensuring they are disposed of properly as they can cause a fire if they are tossed into grass and brush piles. A simple grass fire can grow rapidly and create a much larger fire and even sometimes cause buildings to catch causing extensive damage and potentially displacing members of the public from their homes. As a reminder, if you see an unattended fire or something that appears to be out of control, do not hesitate to call. As the old phrase goes, if you see something, say something. Stay safe and enjoy the spring weather responsibly.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

As the City of Norwich Fire Department continues to monitor the snow storm that is impacting our area. We would like to ask the public for some assistance. We are requesting residents that when they are out shoveling snow from their driveways and sidewalks to also clear nearby fire hydrants. By clearing a three-foot radius around the hydrant will help save precious time in battling a fire. The Fire Department will also evaluate and clear hydrants as needed at the conclusion of the storm. We appreciate everyone's effort and cooperation.

Respectfully,

City of Norwich Fire Department

Today we had a very special guest visit the Museum. George Hitchcock Jr. at 99 years young with 79 years of service both as a Volunteer and Career Firefighter with the Ontario Hose Company and Norwich Fire Department. George joined the fire service in 1943 and later on became a Career Firefighter who would, on many occasions, bunk in and spend the night at the Sheldon St station to ensure they always had a driver.

It was a true honor to see the smile on his face and listen to his stories. George and his family are looking forward to the Grand Opening on June 11th and what the future brings for the Museum.
