Deputy Fire Marshal Southworth with Firefighters Blanchard, Muscarella and Rose were happy to assist the Norwich Free Academy this morning with filling a dunk tank for a special event. The event was an incentive for students who got near perfect attendance and in turn they got to dunk their principals.

We are always happy to assist with anything we can throughout our community.

The East Great Plain Fire Department with Norwich's Engine 1 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to Interstate 395 Northbound between Exits 11 and 13 for a car fire. Car 5 arrived to find a well involved car in the breakdown lane. Engine 52 and the Battalion stretched a 1.75" hose line.

Car 5, Engine 52 and Engine Tanker 51 held the scene with the fire marshal.

Note for all firefighters: Never park the apparatus in line with a burning vehicle and always try to attack the fire from an angle or on the sides. The struts for the hoods and trunks will often shoot out when exposed to high temperatures for a long period. One shot out of the back of this car while crews were operating but did not result in any injuries.

Norwich Firefighters assisted with the Windham Host Community FEMA rehearsal exercise on Saturday, 5/16/22.

The City of Norwich serves as a host community as part of the Millstone Power Station emergency evacuation plan. In the event of an emergency at Millstone, the City of Norwich, in coordination with the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, stands ready to receive residents impacted within the Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ).

This exercise in Windham provided our members with an opportunity to become more familiar with the equipment, procedures, and coordination processes involved in supporting a large-scale emergency response.
