Got old paint cans collecting dust in the garage? Batteries you’ve been meaning to get rid of? A stack of sensitive documents waiting to be shredded?

This Saturday from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, SCRRRA will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event at Norwich Public Works, giving residents a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of items that don’t belong in your regular trash.

Please refer to the map for where to enter the pickup site. Also note that Clinton Ave will be closed to thru traffic for the duration of the event.

Accepted items include:
🎨 Paints, stains, and solvents
🧪 Household cleaners and chemicals
🌱 Pesticides and herbicides
🔋 Household batteries
🚗 Motor oil, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids
💡 Fluorescent bulbs

Did you know that batteries of any kind do not go in the trash or recycling bins? Some batteries can cause fires or cause harmful metals to leach into the ground if thrown out in trash, ending up in a landfill, and harm the environment.

You can drop off batteries at PW, Otis Library, Rose City Senior Center, and the Transfer Station year round free of charge! At PW, just stop by and put them in the bucket inside the door or hand them to someone in the office.
Cell phones can also be brought to the PW office for free recycling.

Acceptable batteries to drop off include:
- alkaline batteries
- coin or watch batteries
- rechargeable/lithium batteries

Car batteries or larger batteries - please take to the Transfer Station at 73 Rogers Rd for recycling.

All batteries are free to recycle at the Transfer Station.

They can also be dropped off at any of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resources Recovery Authority - SCRRRA Household Hazardous Waste collections.

With spring and gardening around the corner, brush up on best management practices to grow a beautiful garden while keeping our local waterways clean and healthy!

What happens in your yard doesn’t stay in your yard. Fertilizers applied to lawns, gardens, and fields can wash away when it rains, carrying excess nitrogen and phosphorus into local streams, rivers, and coves. Once in the water, these nutrients fuel algae blooms that use up oxygen, harm fish and ...

Pothole Season Is Here! 🚧

It's pothole season, and this year winter really did a number on our roads. We are seeing more potholes than usual, and our crew is out every day working hard to get them filled as quickly as possible.

We know hitting a pothole is never fun (all of our tires agree), so we appreciate your patience while we make repairs across the city.

You can help us keep the roads safe by reporting potholes. We can't be everywhere at once, so we may not be aware of every location that needs repair. If you spot one, let us know so we can get it on the list for repair.

☎️ City Streets: Please contact Public Works at 860-823-3798 or 860-823-3799

☎️ State Roads: Please contact CTDOT at 860-823-3210

Thank you for your patience, drive carefully, and remember...spring isn't just mud season in CT, it's pothole season too! 😅

Public Works Notice - Bulky Waste Placement Policy

The Department of Public Works has noticed an increase in bulky waste piles already placed at the curb. PW would like to remind residents that bulky waste items may only be placed at the curb within 24 hours of your scheduled collection day. Items placed earlier than the allowed time create safety concerns, attract scavengers, interfere with normal operations, and negatively impact neighborhood appearance.

The next bulky waste pickup will be the week of May 4th. Residents must schedule a bulky waste pickup in advance, no later than Friday May 1st, by contacting Casella Waste Systems at (860) 423-4527. Items should not be placed at the curb until the pickup has been scheduled and you are within the 24-hour pickup window.

Any bulky waste placed at the curb prior to the 24-hour window that requires removal by the Department of Public Works will result in a fee for services rendered. Charges may include, but are not limited to:

Labor costs
Equipment & fuel usage
Disposal/tonnage fees

Residents are asked to please follow the scheduling and placement guidelines to avoid unnecessary charges and to assist the Department in maintaining safe and efficient operations throughout the community.

Thank you for your cooperation.

We would like to give a huge shoutout & heartfelt thank you to our Public Works crew for the outstanding work they have done keeping our roads clear and passable this winter. This has been one of the toughest winters, with more snowfall than CT has experienced in years. Storm after storm, freezing temperatures, and long nights pushed everyone to their limit, but our crew kept going. The effort required to keep up with these storms has not gone unnoticed.

These men and women have worked long hours, often overnight or on weekends, and with very little sleep, to make sure our community remains safe and accessible. Despite difficult conditions, demanding schedules, and at times negative feedback, they continue to show up every time they are needed and take care of our community.

Because of their dedication our streets stayed open, emergency vehicles could get through, and families could get to where they needed to go. That doesn't happen by accident, it happens because of their hard work, commitment and pride in what they do.

We are truly grateful for the professionalism, resilience, and hard work shown by our Public Works team during one of the most challenging winters in recent memory. Their efforts make a difference every single day, and our community is better because of them.

Thank you for everything you do.
