**PRESS RELEASE**

The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a structure fire in an apartment building at #5 Elmcrest Terrace on Saturday, May 10th at 11:07 pm. The initial dispatch was for smoke on the 2nd floor.

First arriving companies found heavy fire engulfing the 1st and 2nd floors on the front of the building, with possible people trapped inside. A 3rd alarm was immediately transmitted bringing all of Norwalk’s on duty firefighters to the scene. Due to the amount of fire in the front of the building, firefighters went over ladders and through windows to get to the interior to conduct their primary searches. A total of 3 attack lines were placed in service, all while the building was laddered, searched and ventilated. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the front portion of the structure on both the 1st and 2nd floors. Overall, the building suffered severe fire, smoke, and heat damage throughout a good portion. The closed doors to the apartments prevented the fire from taking total control of the entire building.
All 34 on duty firefighters responded along with fire department staff chiefs and the Fire Marshal’s Division. Norwalk EMS provided an EMS standby for the firefighters operating on scene while mutual aid companies from Westport, New Canaan, Rowayton, and Stamford provided station coverage.

Currently, there are 8 families displaced totaling close to 20 people. 4 occupants were evaluated by Norwalk EMS but refused treatment.

The Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
