It’s been a busy start to the new year here in the Mechanics Division.
-We started off with a radiator replacement in the rescue as well as attending to other issues and preventative maintenance items while it spends time in the shop.
-An in-house customized foam organizer was cut and setup to easily transport the new exothermic torch tool and supplies.
- When an engine company remained on scene for an extended time period in the single digit temperatures we are experiencing a portable generator and heater was set up to keep the the pump plumbing from freezing and causing damage to valves and plumbing that would cause the apparatus to be taken out of service.
- Finishing this past weekend out the division is tasked with plowing and maintaining the 6 stations parking lots allowing the apparatus to respond to any emergency without delay.

With the winter season here that means so is the ❄️. While we keep the station parking lots clear of snow so that the apparatus can respond to emergencies it’s a good time to share the reminder to adopt a hydrant and keep it clear. Not only could it save your property in an emergency it could save your neighbors. It only takes a few minutes to clear a path and help your community.

This past week was another busy one in the shop. From starting the week off with our vendor completing annual aerial ladder testing we continued the week with our 1993 spare rescue having a stuck injector requiring replacement. Keeping to the spare fleet the wheel seals were found to be leaking oil and contaminated the brake shoes on the reserve ladder requiring disassembly and replacement. Finishing the week off the division provided support to crews that were operating at a structure fire this weekend by providing capabilities with our new truck mounted mobile SCBA compressor and fill station.

The NFD Mechanics Division has been busy these past few months with several large projects coming in as well as handling the day to day repairs that roll in. The department took delivery of a refurbished 29’ Metalshark Defiant boat that the shop up fitted to retire a late 80’s open cab rescue boat. Going from sea to land Engine 4 recently spent some time in the shop getting some attention. Some of the items included bearings in the pump gearbox that were worn, ECM electrical control harness that became faulty from damaged wires, all new heater hoses, turbo, and a list of other items. We have also had some other vehicles that required leaf springs or had broken spring mounting hardware. Additionally we have taken delivery of several administrative and fire marshal’s vehicles and a few smaller support apparatus.

Although our page has been a little quiet here as of late the shop has not. With a steady flow of repairs and services keeping a fleet running 24/7 the wrenches have been busy. Now that nice weather is starting to return. Today was a good day to give the aerial on Norwalk Fire Department Truck Co. 2 a power wash and cleaning while in for service and repairs.

With the recent increase in traffic incidents involving motorists colliding with personnel and or apparatus on our highways, as well as the increasing cost and years of delays in receiving a replacement apparatus. The City of Norwalk, CT and Norwalk Fire Department have taken a proactive step towards protecting the personnel and apparatus operating on the local highways by purchasing a mobile attenuator truck to respond and provide an extra zone of protection for a fraction of the cost and time it would take to replace a traditional apparatus that is currently used. Additionally we have begun to integrate in all of our apparatus the ability to work with the HAAS Alert system to inform compatible vehicles on the road to the presence of our apparatus when responding to an emergency or operating at an emergency scene. This unit known as TAC 1 will be put in service in the next few weeks.

Thank you to Gowans-Knight Co.,Inc. for their work on this project.
