There's a difference between telling a parent "we help kids build social skills" and actually letting them watch it happen in front of them. We'd rather show you.

That's why we're opening our doors on Sunday, October 18th for a free Open House at our Stamford location. It's built around Lego Friendship Builders, a simple, hands-on activity where two kids build together while one of our team members actively coaches the moment-to-moment stuff: taking turns, sharing, working through a disagreement about whose idea to try next. It's exactly the kind of everyday social moment we work on all season long, just happening right in front of you instead of described to you.

You don't need to commit to anything by showing up. Come watch, meet our team, ask whatever's on your mind, and get a real feel for what a season at The Hangout Spot actually looks like day to day.

Drop in any time between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, no need to stay the whole window, no need to sign up for anything beyond the open house itself.

As parents of neurodivergent children and children with special needs, we’ve been to the fairs. We’ve collected the brochures. And sometimes, we’ve still gone home feeling alone.

So we created something different.

The Inclusive Together Community Connections Fair is about real conversations, meaningful support, and connections that last beyond one afternoon.

We’ve also carefully chosen four breakout sessions around the conversations families are actually having — parenting, self-care, safety, advocacy, special education and more.

Come with questions. Come to learn. Come to meet someone who gets it.

If you've seen headlines this summer about special education being handed off to a different federal agency, you're not imagining things, but the actual situation is a lot less alarming than it sounds.

Here's what's true: some of the day-to-day administrative work around IDEA, things like grant processing and state monitoring, did shift over to Health and Human Services back in June. But the law itself never moved. Congress is the only one who can change that, and they haven't.

Therefore, your child's IEP rights, the school's obligations, prior written notice, all of it reads exactly the same today as it did last spring.

Funding wasn't cut either. It's just being processed through a different system now.

Is this settled for good? Not quite. There's a bill working its way through the Senate right now that would block the transfer entirely, so this is still very much in motion.

Our honest take for families heading into IEP season:

1) Ask for things in writing
2) Keep your own file
3) Make sure everyone working with your child has actually read the plan

That habit protects you no matter what's happening in Washington.

What's one social skill you wish came a little more naturally to your kid? Starting a conversation, reading the room, knowing what to do when a game doesn't go their way?

For us, it's honestly different for every kid we work with, and that's kind of the point. There's no one "right" way social skills are supposed to look, some kids need practice with the big stuff like making a friend, others just need help with the small in-between moments, like knowing what to say when things get quiet.

We came across a good reminder recently: kids don't need to be the most social one in the room, having even one or two solid friendships makes a real difference.

Hey Friends!

There's an interesting piece out this back-to-school season on all the new rules schools are rolling out this fall, phone bans, AI policies, screen time limits.

It's definitely worth a read if you haven't seen it (link below).

But the part that stuck with us wasn't really about technology at all. It was this line: relationships have to be built through the friction and repair that no chatbot will ever provide.

That's really the heart of it. You can put rules in place around when a phone comes out or how AI gets used in the classroom, and those rules matter. But none of them actually teach a kid how to sit with an awkward pause in conversation, read a friend's body language, or work through a disagreement on the playground. Those are skills that only get built through real practice, with real people, in real time.

That's the work we do every day. Not around policy, around practice. Helping kids build the actual muscle of connecting with someone else, one interaction at a time.

As the new school year kicks off and everyone's talking about new rules, we're thinking about the oldest rule there is: kids learn how to connect by connecting.
