April 12-16 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time to recognize the dispatchers who answer the call when someone in the community needs help.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, public safety telecommunicators handle about 240 million 911 calls across the country each year. Every call requires calm, focus and quick decision-making as dispatchers gather critical information and coordinate the response from police, fire and EMS.

This week, we thank the dispatchers who support our officers and firefighters and serve our community every day. Their work is often behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in every emergency response.

Residents can join us in recognizing dispatchers this week by sharing a message of thanks or recognizing their work on social media.

Members of the Norton Fire Department recently trained on newly acquired personal escape systems, giving firefighters another tool to protect themselves in emergency situations.

The systems are designed as a last-resort option, allowing firefighters to safely lower themselves or assist others from an elevated position when no other escape routes are available.

The equipment was purchased thanks to generous donations from North Easton Savings Bank and Paul and Linda Schleicher of Norton. Their contributions helped ensure firefighters have access to equipment that can make a difference in critical moments.

Firefighters recently trained on how to properly deploy the systems and when to use them in the field.

With Daylight Saving Time beginning Sunday, March 8, the Norton Fire Department reminds residents to change their clocks ahead one hour and check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.

Working alarms provide early warning during a fire or CO emergency, giving residents the time they need to get out safely. Residents should test each alarm, replace batteries if needed and make sure alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, about three out of five fire deaths nationwide occur in homes where smoke alarms are missing or not working. Fire officials recommend replacing smoke alarms every 10 years and checking the manufacturing date printed on the back of each device. CO alarms typically need replacement every five, seven, or 10 years depending on the model.

The Norton Fire Department asks residents to keep the community safe by shoveling snow away from fire hydrants. Residents can help by clearing a path from the street to the hydrant, with a three foot radius shoveled around the fire hydrant. When responding to an emergency, the extra minutes it takes firefighters to shovel snow can make a life-changing difference. Together, we can all do our part to help protect each other.

A significant winter storm is expected to impact our area this late Sunday night into Monday night. The Norton Fire Department has prepared by increasing staffing levels and taking additional measures to ensure we’re ready to respond.

Please review the following safety reminders to stay safe during and after the storm:

Please keep your house numbers visible and clear fire hydrants near your residence if you are able.

Unless absolutely necessary, avoid driving during and immediately following the storm. Staying off the roads will help keep you and your family safe and allow plow operators and emergency services personnel to do their jobs more safely.

If possible, clear a path from your driveway to your residence so First Responders can quickly access your home in the event of an emergency. Also, clear any exterior vents for furnaces, dryers, or other fossil fuel-burning appliances to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Only use generators outdoors and well away from windows, doors, and vents. Never use a generator in a garage, basement, or near your home.

Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries, if they use replaceable batteries.

Shovel safely: take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion and stay hydrated. Stop and call 911 if you develop chest pain, shortness of breath, or any other symptoms of a medical emergency.

We are here to help if you have an emergency or need immediate assistance, so please do not hesitate to contact us by calling 911. Please do not leave a voicemail or use the online contact form, as they are not continuously monitored.

In the event of prolonged power outages, the Norton Emergency Management Agency is prepared to open a Warming Shelter if it is needed. However, we encourage residents to proactively prepare for this type of situation to the extent possible.

Please see the links below from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency for additional information on preparing for emergencies and power outages.

Stay safe, take precautions, and check in on your neighbors.

Power outages are short- or long-term loss of electric power.
