For Sgt. Scott VanWylen, the best part of police work is walking into a school and getting swarmed by kids for high fives and hugs.

VanWylen has spent 12 and a half years with the Norton Shores Police Department, most recently leading POINT, the department's community-focused unit that puts officers in schools and neighborhoods across the city. Earlier this month, he stepped into a new role as lieutenant, taking on both POINT and the detective bureau.

Norton Shores has two volunteer boards looking for residents right now.

Zoning Board of Appeals
Hears appeals of decisions made under the city's ordinances. Members are appointed by City Council for three-year terms and meet as needed at 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the Library.

CDBG Advisory Committee
Helps guide funding for home repairs, senior transportation, and fair housing across the city. Two seats are open. Meets twice a year.

Starting July 1, 2026, your water and sewer bill includes new line items.

The City restructured how water, sewer, and irrigation charges are billed, splitting out costs that used to be combined into one commodity rate.

Each account connected to public water and sewer now sees separate charges based on meter size (Debt Service and Ready-to-Serve) alongside usage-based charges (Commodity). This gives a clearer picture of what each charge pays for, from the bond on the water system to maintenance and treatment through the County of Muskegon.

A major improvement project is coming to the Harvey Street and Sternberg Road intersection. The project will 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽.

🚦 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪:

Phase 1 construction is scheduled to start 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟴, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Access to Harvey St. will be completely closed north of the intersection. 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄.
