Reminder: City Hall will be closed today (Friday, June 19) in observance of Juneteenth.
The City of Northport joins communities across the country in observing Juneteenth, a day that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.
Juneteenth provides an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, recognize the strength and contributions of African Americans, and celebrate the enduring values of freedom, equality, and opportunity for all.
