Today’s Meta Settlement: A Major Victory for Teen Mental Health!!!
A landmark settlement with Meta could reshape how teenagers use social media and could have a meaningful impact on teen mental health in the years ahead.
Under the proposed agreement, users under 18 would face a two-hour daily limit on Facebook and Instagram, along with a midnight-to-6 a.m. overnight restriction and limits on notifications during school hours. Parents would have greater control over whether certain restrictions can be changed.
For too many young people, social media has become an around-the-clock presence that can interfere with sleep, school, healthy relationships and emotional well-being. These safeguards are an important recognition that protecting children must come before maximizing screen time.
The settlement still requires court approval, but it could establish an important precedent for how technology companies are expected to protect young people online.
