As of 8:00 AM on May 3, the North Carolina Forest Service and the Wilkes County Fire Marshal’s Office have officially lifted the burn ban for Wilkes County.

Burn permits are now available in counties where the ban has been lifted. Residents must obtain a valid permit prior to any outdoor burning. Please be advised that any permits issued before the statewide ban are no longer valid. New permits can be obtained through an authorized permitting agent or online at:
https://apps.ncagr.gov/burnpermits/

Although the burn ban has been lifted, all residents are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution when conducting outdoor burning and to remain in full compliance with North Carolina burning laws.

BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT

BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.

OFFICAL STATEMENT

The Town of North Wilkesboro in light of recent drought conditions in our region is requesting customers in its service population to voluntarily conserve water. The service population includes the Town of North Wilkesboro, West Wilkes Water Association, Blue Ridge Water Association, Mulberry-Fairplains Water Association, and Broadway Water Association.

Mulberry-Fairplains Water Association is not currently experiencing conditions that would require a mandatory water conservation action, this notice is only voluntary. We are simply looking ahead and asking our customers to conserve water when they are able until drought conditions in our area end.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

..INCREASED FIRE DANGER TODAY FOR PORTIONS OF NORTH CAROLINA AND
VIRGINIA THROUGH 8PM...

Increased fire danger conditions exist today due to the
combination of low relative humidity values in the 20 to 30
percent range, dry fuels, and gusty southwest winds. This will
result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires
through this evening.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any
potential ignition source, including machinery, ci******es, and
matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any
dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to
spread quickly.

NC Forest Service personnel has also advised our office of the fire weather and conditions that they are given each day. It states that fuel moistures are at or near the all-time low values and getting lower over the next few days. this will create extreme fire behavior.

Southwest winds today and tomorrow will pick up in the afternoon hours when humidity will be at its lowest values contributing to fire spread. Winds are forecast to be stronger on Thursday afternoon. This weather and fuel mixture are aligned for extreme fire behavior in the event of a brush, grass or woods fire.

The burn ban is still in place and will remain in place until the forest service deems enough rain has fallen to quell the fire danger.
The ban includes all outside burning including recreational fires, fire pits, outdoor chimneys etc.
Our Wilkes County Fire Department have received multiple calls over that past 2 ½ weeks for trash fire. On top of the burn ban, burning any type of trash or debris is illegal per NC Burning Laws.

This is addressed in G.S. 143-215.3(a)(1); 143-215.107(a)(5);
Eff. July 1, 1996;
Amended Eff. January 1, 2015; July 1, 2007; June 1, 2004;
Readopted Eff. September 1, 2019.

This also can be found at the like below:
Section .1900-Open Burning | NC DEQ

The NC Forest Service can and will ticket those offenders who burn during the burn ban and have fires that have escaped and become a loose fire.

The Wilkes Fire Marshals Office will come out as well. If the fire involves materials other than natural vegetation on the property, photos and information will be forwarded to NC DEQ for further investigation. Fines from NC DEQ for illegal burning start at $10,000 and range to $25,000. If the incident involves a large trash or debris field a fine of $10,000 per day until clean up occurs could be assessed.

This week, April 12th–18th, 2026, we proudly recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW).

Behind every emergency response is a calm, steady voice on the other end of the line—our 911 dispatchers. These men and women are the true “first” first responders, answering the call no matter the hour, gathering critical information, and ensuring help gets where it’s needed as quickly as possible.

Their work often goes unseen, but it is absolutely vital to the safety of our community and the success of every response we make. From providing life-saving instructions to coordinating multiple agencies during emergencies, their dedication and professionalism never go unnoticed by those of us in the field.

Mulberry-Fairplains Fire / Rescue would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all public safety telecommunicators for their hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

Thank you for being the calm in the chaos. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

WORKING FIRE – TABERNACLE RD

At approximately 4:00 AM, your Mulberry-Fairplains Fire / Rescue was dispatched to a possible structure fire on Tabernacle Road.

Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered a single-wide mobile home with visible fire showing, and the incident was upgraded to a working fire. All responding agencies worked seamlessly together and were able to quickly bring the fire under control.

Agencies Responding:
• Mulberry-Fairplains Fire / Rescue (Primary)
• Mountain View Fire Department
• Knotville Fire Department
• Wilkes County EMS
• Wilkes County Fire Marshal’s Office

This incident serves as an important reminder to NEVER leave cooking unattended. According to the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), cooking is the leading cause of home fires in North Carolina, with the majority resulting from unattended stoves.

Stay safe, and remember — STAND BY YOUR PAN

At approximately 4:30 PM, Mulberry Fairplains Fire Department was dispatched to a woods fire. Thanks to the quick response and teamwork of personnel from Mulberry Fairplains, Millers Creek Fire Department, NC Forest Service, and Wilbar Fire Department, crews were able to respond swiftly and work together to bring the situation under control.

This incident serves as an important reminder of how dangerous outdoor burning can be during periods of high fire danger. Dry conditions, wind, and low humidity can cause fire to spread rapidly and unpredictably in a matter of seconds.

We strongly urge everyone to avoid outdoor burning during high fire weather conditions. One small spark can quickly turn into a serious wildfire, putting lives, property, and responders at risk.

We appreciate the support of our neighboring departments and ask our community to continue doing their part to help prevent wildfires and keep everyone safe.
