Cape May County Launches SHIELD Task Force Initiative to Enhance Highway Safety and Reduce Traffic Fatalities

Cape May Court House, NJ – Cape May County law enforcement agencies, under the leadership of the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, are proud to announce the implementation of the SHIELD Task Force Initiative (Safety on Highways through Intensive Enforcement & Law Enforcement Deployment), a countywide traffic safety partnership designed to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes through coordinated, high-visibility enforcement and public engagement.
The SHIELD Task Force brings together every municipal police department in Cape May County, the Cape May County Sheriff's Office, the New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety in a unified effort to address dangerous driving behaviors that continue to threaten residents and visitors throughout the county.

Cape May County experiences unique traffic safety challenges due to seasonal tourism, increased shore traffic, and heavily traveled highway corridors. Through a data-driven approach, SHIELD will focus enforcement and educational efforts on the leading causes of serious crashes, including speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and pedestrian safety.
The initiative will utilize crash analysis, enforcement data, and traffic trends to identify high-risk locations and deploy targeted operations, including saturation patrols, DUI checkpoints, speed enforcement details, and multi-agency enforcement waves throughout the county.

"The SHIELD Task Force represents a significant step forward in our commitment to protecting the residents and visitors of Cape May County," said Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. "By bringing together local, county, and state law enforcement partners under a unified strategy, we can more effectively address dangerous driving behaviors, increase public awareness, and ultimately save lives on our roadways. Through visibility, enforcement, and education, our goal is simple: prevent tragedies before they occur."
The SHIELD Task Force will also incorporate a comprehensive public awareness campaign designed to educate motorists and reinforce safe driving behaviors. Messaging will complement national highway safety initiatives such as "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket," while emphasizing the certainty of enforcement and personal responsibility behind the wheel.

The program is supported through partnerships with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and will seek additional state and federal highway safety funding opportunities to ensure long-term sustainability.

Law enforcement officials will continuously evaluate the effectiveness of SHIELD through the analysis of crash data, enforcement activity, DUI arrests, and public awareness metrics. Findings will be used to refine strategies and maximize the initiative's impact on roadway safety.
The SHIELD Task Force is scheduled to begin its initial operational phase this summer, with enforcement and educational efforts continuing year-round throughout Cape May County.

For additional information regarding the SHIELD Task Force Initiative, please contact the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.

On June 3rd, 2026 we celebrated our Margaret Mace Elementary School & Wildwood Catholic Crusaders L.E.A.D. graduates at Morey's Piers & Beachfront Water Parks! During the L.E.A.D. program, students demonstrated their commitment to resisting the many pressures, both direct and subtle, which would otherwise influence them to experiment with drugs or engage in violent behavior. After the graduation ceremony, students and officers spent the day at Mariners Landing Pier enjoying the rides!

A special thank you to student, Brody Nocito for the exceptional essay he read at the graduation ceremony. His words were very inspiring to everyone in attendance!

We would like to thank the following organizations for their generous donations as without your support, this would not be possible!
