From North Wales Borough:

One More Reminder: Summer Kickoff is Today!

The wait is over. Join North Wales Parks & Rec at Weingartner Park from 5 PM to 9 PM for our Summer Kickoff celebration.

Live music from Soundwave Band, food trucks, local breweries, kids games, and a fireworks finale to close out the night. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors for an evening of music, food, and community fun.

A big thank you again to our generous fireworks sponsors for making the finale possible.

A quick reminder to keep pets indoors with some background noise, and to bring earplugs or headphones if loud sounds bother you or your kids.

See you at the park. Let’s kick off summer in style.

It feels like it was just a short while ago that I was telling folks about extreme cold and snowstorms. Now we're on the flip side of things.

Today and tomorrow, we're expected to hit some significantly hot heat indices along with the thunderstorms that usually accompany those conditions. As always, stay safe, be prepared, and stay cool. Check on your neighbors who may not have access to cool spaces.

If you need a place to take a break from the heat - check out the North Wales Area Library and their renovated spaces!

⚠️🥵⛈️ The hottest heat indices so far this year are expected today, topping out near 100° this afternoon in most areas. Near record breaking highs in the low to mid 90s. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Friday for portions of the area, as similarly hot and humid conditions are expected again on Friday.

Similar to Wednesday, scattered storms are forecast to develop late afternoon/evening. However the risk of severe storms will be greater today, with damaging winds as the main threat.

At tonight’s North Wales Borough Council meeting, I had the privilege and honor of swearing in Ryan Varela, the newest full time officer for North Wales Borough Police Department.

My Mayor’s Report:

1) One of the best parts of my job is having the opportunity to swear in new police officers like Ryan.

2) Last week, I had the pleasure of drafting a proclamation honoring the retirement of Pastor Lorraine Foster from Sanctuary Church. It was a touching farewell service where Pastor Lorraine was able to pay her respects to her mentors. The proclamation recognized the long history that Sanctuary has had here in North Wales Borough and its continuing connections with our community.

3) I am looking forward to the this weekend's Summer Kickoff and Sunday's service at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church - North Wales, PA formally celebrating their 250th anniversary with a proclamation to honor that as well.

America isn’t the only 250-year-old celebrating their milestone this year. St.Peter's North Wales is also celebrating 250 years.

Yesterday on my walk, I stopped at their graveyard to walk among the folks whose names are on our streets and parks.

There are plaques that provide context for why some of the graves are notable! Next time you’re out for a walk, stop in and spend some time (respectfully, please) among our dearly departed.

Last week, the communities of North Wales Borough, Ambler, Lower Gwynedd Township and Upper Gwynedd Township heard a summary of a report created by Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development on the topic of fire department coverage at the request of the municipalities.

The article talks about some of the overarching recommendations from the report, but it misses a lot of the vital context.

There is absolutely no question that the volunteers in our fire companies, North Penn Volunteer Fire Company, Wissahickon Fire Company, and Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department are dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the communities they serve.

Everyone will acknowledge there are significant challenges with declining volunteerism, increased training and fundraising needs, and the needs of work and family outside of the firehouse. In other parts of the state, communities have suddenly found themselves without fire department coverage when the services suddenly stop for a number of reasons.

This report and its recommendations come at a crucial time. Everyone acknowledges that the cost of doing something in the short-term would be significant. The challenges toward any type of regionalization work is significant.

But the cost of doing nothing may be astronomical and extremely painful for future generations of North Wales residents.

The report (links in the first comment) and its subsequent discussion at future Council meetings will require significant input from the community and we'll continue to keep you posted throughout.

This morning, I had the pleasure of speaking briefly at Sanctuary Church recognizing and honoring the service of Pastor Lorraine Foster who was celebrating her retirement service today.

When I became Mayor, she was one of the first to reach out and we've had the pleasure of working together throughout both of our tenures.

I have the honor of declaring today "Pastor Lorraine Foster" day in North Wales Borough in celebration of her service and ask Borough residents to celebrate the work of the clergy in our communities.
