Emergency Medical Care Training for Jennings County Jail Staff

In January, Administration Staff with the Jennings County Jail had worked hand in hand with Ian Godfrey, Training Director with Jennings County EMS, in creating and providing a first ever in depth Advanced Medical Criteria for Correctional Officers.

Today marks day 1 of 4
The Emergency Medical Care Criteria is a (16) hour course throughout a (4) day time frame. Correctional Staff will be given the knowledge on how to determine a Medical Emergency and how to properly care for the patient.

This training program consists of Medical Legality knowledge such as: Legal, moral, and ethical understanding, State and Federal law along with Constitutional rights and emergency medical practice.

Along with Medical Legality, Correctional Staff will understand and train the proper technique in caring for a patient in medical distress. This portion consists of but not limited to: Patient Assessment, Airway management, Trauma Emergency, etc.

A huge thank you to Ian Godfrey with EMS for developing this criteria and instructing it to Officers of the Jennings County Jail Division.

THRIVE Advocation at the Jennings County Jail

THRIVE RCO is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to advocating for and supporting houseless individuals, those grappling with mental health issues, and individuals experiencing substance use disorders. Our mission is to empower vulnerable populations through access to compassionate care and comprehensive services, while promoting dignity, resilience, and recovery. Through collaborative partnerships, community engagement initiatives, and evidence-based practices, we strive to cultivate inclusive communities and advance social justice for all individuals facing these challenges. THRIVE offers Peer Support, Community Outreach, Street Outreach, and IRACS.

Inside the Jennings County Jail:

THRIVE works with the incarcerated population to help navigate their next steps. THRIVE and their certified peer support specialists work inside Jennings County Jail using the Indiana official evidence-based Matrix model for justice involved persons. The Matrix model includes recovery skills, relapse prevention, and reintegration. We also navigate individuals to treatment while awaiting pre-trial, treatment upon release, refer to Jennings County ARC, transitional housing, sign them up for therapy upon release, begin recovery plans, provide transportation to treatment, and obtain social security cards as well as birth certificates while incarcerated so they can find employment upon release. We also help them to identify and eliminate any barriers they may face. We walk alongside individuals once they are released to help support them in their recovery for as long as they need.

Michelle Hall and Ashley Brewer work diligently on a weekly basis to advocate and support incarcerated individuals at the Jennings County Jail.

Michelle Hall states:

“I love my job at the Jennings County Jail because it gives me the chance to walk alongside justice-involved individuals as they focus on recovery and getting the help they deserve. As someone in recovery myself, living with co-occurring mental health issues, I understand the fear, shame, and hope that often come with this journey. Being able to share empathy, encouragement, and practical support allows me to turn my own lived experience into something meaningful, helping others see that change is possible and that they are not alone.”

Education for the Incarcerated in the Jennings County Jail

Stacey King has been the Educational Instructor within the Jennings County Jail for almost 9 years, spending several days a week working diligently to provide the incarcerated population a chance to turn their life around one class at a time.

The Jennings County Education Center provides short term training and educational opportunities to inmates while they are housed in the jail. This includes study classes and testing for a High School Equivalency Diploma, Pre-Apprenticeship Construction with OSHA 10 Certification, and Certified Logistic Technician Certification. All of these opportunities allow for increased employability skills upon release.

Stacey King states:
“How do I think that the educational opportunities benefit the incarcerated? People are in jail because they have made poor decisions and these educational opportunities give people a chance to decide that they want to make better decisions. While people are incarcerated and waiting on a court date or to serve out their time, they should be doing things that are going to help them be better members of society, not sitting idle and wasting time.”

“What do I enjoy most about teaching at the jail? After almost 9 years of teaching at the jail, what I enjoy the most is giving people the opportunity to have their first taste of success. So many people who have been in jail have had a long history of being in trouble and that is all they have known. I feel like if they get to experience how great it feels to earn something that they have worked hard for, it will change their life. Granted, this does not work for everyone, but knowing that I can try to make a difference keeps me coming back every day.”

“We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it.” ~ Rick Warren

New Life - Residents Encounter Christ at the Jennings County Jail

New Life (REC) is a weekend faith based event that immerses incarcerated individuals in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Vision Statement: "The event typically lasts three days with extensive presentations, discussions, and demonstrations of love with the hope to bring a plan of salvation to first time believers and encourage those who are firmly established in their relationship with God."

Mission Statement: "It is our mission to reach residents of the local county jails and any other areas where God opens the door with the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ."

Residents Encounter Christ does not end after the weekend concludes. Several volunteers return on a weekly basis to meet with willing residents to continue follow-up discussions on emotional and spiritual health, future plans and needs assessments. Volunteers also work with several partners to provide clothing, transitional housing and transportation to and from treatment.

New Life - Residents Encounter Christ states, "Our desire is to walk alongside others who might need guidance, along with an extra hand in life."

This is the official social media page for the Jennings County Sheriff's Office: Jail Division. As the Jennings County Sheriff's Office is accessible to inform the public about incidents and events that occur in the public, the Jennings County Jail Division's page differentiates.

This page is to serve you as a county, an opening eye of what occurs on the other side of the wall. We want to not only recognize the men and women that take pride into serving the community in the Correctional Division, but also the mission of rehabilitating the incarcerated population back into society in a much more efficient manner than what they came in.

You can expect a variety of information to be posted onto this page including full appreciation of the Officers employed, real time certifications that ensure proper training to the staff, commendations, programs and classes to deter individuals from going back into incarceration, etc. etc.

One of the biggest questions we see is the public asking what happened to an individuals case after a prolonged amount of time from the initial arrest. With this, we also want the ability to update the public on convictions and sentencing of high importance cases.

We encourage you to share this page with family and friends as we hope to benefit the community positively.
