The Town of Vassalboro is officially seeking civic-minded residents to step forward and fill four vital leadership roles within the community. Openings include two full voting seats and two alternate seats on the Vassalboro Planning Board.
The Planning Board plays a critical role in guiding the town’s growth, reviewing land use applications, and ensuring that new developments align with Vassalboro’s comprehensive plan and ordinances. Serving on this board offers a direct, powerful way to shape the local economy, protect natural resources, and preserve the unique rural character of the community.
"Civic duty is the backbone of a strong town," said Town Manager Aaron Miller. "Serving on the Planning Board is one of the most impactful ways a resident can give back. No prior background in municipal planning is required—just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and serve the best interests of fellow neighbors. Town of Vassalboro Partners with Penobscot Indian Nation and State to Seek Federal Grant for Mill Hill Road Crossing Upgrade

VASSALBORO, ME — July 8, 2026 — The Town of Vassalboro has announced its formal participation as a municipal partner in a major environmental and infrastructure project. The project, titled "Reconnecting Habitats for Anadromous Fishes in the Penobscot Watershed and Adjacent Drainages," is a collaborative initiative led by the Penobscot Indian Nation alongside the Maine Department of Marine Resources and the Maine Department of Transportation.
The coalition is actively seeking funding from the Federal Highway Administration through the competitive Culvert Aquatic Organism Passage Opportunity grant. If awarded, the grant will fully fund the replacement of the aging and improperly sized crossing on Mill Hill Road in Vassalboro.
The current infrastructure at Sevenmile Stream is severely undersized for the waterway. It creates a physical barrier that blocks critical sea-run and climate-resilient fish stocks from reaching their native upstream spawning habitats. While Vassalboro leadership has long considered this crossing a high priority, the scale of the replacement requires external federal backing to move forward.
"The coordination provided by the Penobscot Indian Nation and the State of Maine is exactly what is needed to make this project a reality," said Vassalboro Town Manager Aaron C. Miller. "By leveraging federal grant dollars, we can successfully replace this failing infrastructure and eliminate a heavy financial burden that would otherwise fall squarely on our local taxpayers."
In addition to correcting structural deficiencies on Mill Hill Road, the regional project will yield massive ecological and recreational benefits. Restoring the natural stream flow will grant endangered Atlantic salmon and other sea-run species access to 7,999 acres of alewife habitat, over 1,670 units of salmon habitat, and more than 80 miles of vital river systems. The expanded fish passage is also expected to enhance regional recreational harvesting opportunities for local families.
The Town of Vassalboro remains fully committed to working with its state and tribal partners to implement a sustainable, long-term solution for Sevenmile Stream.

The Vassalboro Town Office will close early at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The office is typically open on Tuesdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
This temporary schedule adjustment is necessary to allow municipal staff to close out the financial books, as the town's fiscal year concludes on June 30. Due to the intensive system processing required for the year-end audit preparation, it will not be possible to conduct regular municipal business transactions after 3:00 p.m. Residents will not be able to process motor vehicle registrations at the Town Office, complete property tax payments, or obtain licensing during the final two hours of the business day.
Community members are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and complete any necessary in-person business earlier in the day or prior to June 30. Standard operating hours will resume on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 7:30 a.m..
For those needing to make routine payments, or reregister vehicles, select services may still be accessed remotely through the town's online portal. Residents can review available electronic options by visiting the Vassalboro Online Bill Pay Page. Town of Vassalboro Announces New Schedule for Selectboard Meetings

VASSALBORO, Maine — The Town of Vassalboro officially announces a change to the schedule of its regularly scheduled Selectboard meetings. Beginning Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the Selectboard will transition its meeting day from Thursdays to Wednesdays.
Meetings will continue to be held every two weeks at 6:30 p.m. All sessions will take place at the Vassalboro Town Office, located at 682 Main Street.
This scheduling adjustment aims to improve municipal operations and ensure the efficient conduct of town business. Residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming June 24 meeting under the new schedule to stay informed on local matters and participate in community discussions.
