To the dads who carry more than anyone sees.
the dad holding hands in hospital rooms.
the dads making everyone laugh on hard days.

The dads who have tea parties with you and sing you to sleep.
the dads who teach you how to ride a bike and throw a fastball.
The dads holding their families together through the unimaginable.
And the dads who help us cross the finish line. 💙

This Father's Day, we celebrate the incredible fathers caring for children with life-threatening illnesses. Your strength, love, patience, and devotion inspires us every day.

From all of us at Friends of Karen, Happy Father's Day to the heroes behind so many brave children.

To the angel dads who have been part of the Friends of Karen family.

Today, we honor fathers whose children are deeply loved and deeply missed. Fatherhood does not end when your child dies.

The love, the hopes, the memories, and the bond remain woven into every part of who you are.

This Father's Day, may you find moments of connection, remembrance, and gentleness for yourself.

"RUN!"

That's how 7-year-old Ellis answered when we asked what he can do now that he couldn't do during cancer treatment.

Ellis was just 4 and 5 years old when he was being treated for cancer. Today, he remembers playing games with his Child Life Specialist, building a gingerbread house, talking about feelings, and receiving a special birthday stuffie. He still uses the Minecraft backpack he got from Friends of Karen when he returned to school.

When he hears the word survivor, he thinks of a shirt that said "Tiny but Mighty."

"It means I am strong."

We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

This National Cancer Survivors Month, we're celebrating Ellis and all the children and families who remind us what strength, resilience, and hope look like every day. 💛

Survivorship is more than treatment; it is learning to navigate healing, uncertainty, and change while rebuilding life in meaningful ways.

We recognize the courage it takes to move through each day, and we honor the families, caregivers, and communities who provide steady support along the way.

This month, we stand with survivors—not only in recognition, but in continued commitment to care, dignity, and hope.

Why Summer Camp Matters for Kids 💛

Camp gives children facing cancer, illness, or grief - and their siblings - a chance to just be kids again.

✨ Meet others who understand
✨ Build confidence & independence
✨ Experience therapeutic activities
✨ Make lifelong friendships
✨ Discover new adventures
✨ Enjoy more nature & less screen time

At camp, they’re not defined by illness or loss, they can simply be themselves.

We’ve compiled a list of camps specifically designed for children with cancer, other illnesses, grief experiences, and their siblings—programs that truly understand the emotional and medical needs of these families.

A huge thank you to our friends at Proterial America for visiting us in North Salem! It was an honor for our Executive Director, Stefanie Ortiz-Cidlik, to accept this generous gift in person.

Partners like Proterial America are the reason we can provide a vital lifeline to families navigating the challenges of childhood illness. Together, we are ensuring that no family has to walk this path alone.

Behind every family we support is a dedicated team working together!

The Friends of Karen staff came together last week for a team retreat—collaborating on our annual plan of work, developing our professional skills, and growing stronger as a unit. We are energized, aligned, and ready to continue ensuring no family faces childhood illness alone.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, the national theme “More Good Days, Together,” led by Mental Health America, underscores a simple idea: mental health improves when people feel supported, understood, and connected. This is central to the work of Friends of Karen.

For families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness, emotional strain is constant. Uncertainty, medical complexity, and disruption to daily life can take a significant toll on both caregivers and children. Friends of Karen steps in to provide consistent, individualized emotional support that adapts to each family’s needs over time. The approach combines mental health care with practical support. Our Family Support Team offers ongoing emotional support to parents, children, and siblings, helping them process change, fear, and grief in high stress moments. They also address caregiver burnout, creating space for honest conversations, and introducing coping strategies that sustain long term resilience. At the same time, Friends of Karen social workers assist with financial help, resource navigation, and advocacy, reducing external stressors that directly affect mental health.

This work reflects a broader truth: Emotional support is not separate from care—it is essential to it. By showing up consistently and building meaningful connections with the entire family, we can support mental health, and help families experience more good days, together.
