A prescribed burn to control invasive plant species and maintain the native plant communities was conducted by the North Saint Paul Fire Department under the guidance of the Southwood Nature Preserve Task Force and a resident MN Master Naturalist today.

If you've been in the Preserve, chances are you met Cathy. For many years, Cathy has cared for the heart and soul of Southwood. Her knowledge of the natural world, her passion for Southwood, and her hard work will be felt in this place for a long time. We will miss her greatly.

Volunteers from St. Mark's Evangelical Luther Church and Community of Christ Church cleared an area under some Red Pines in the preserve. It exposed some of the native plants hidden under the brush and buckthorn, including Solomon's Seal and Jack-in-the-Pulpit.

North JRROTC came out on a cool day to do a cleanup at Southwood. They found a tire in the pond and managed to get it out and not get wet!

A hard working crew from GAP school spent the day removing buckthorn from the preserve. Thanks for all the hard work. They actually did the work October 26th before the ground was covered with snow.

Volunteers came out Saturday, October 8th, for our work day, and continued the work of removing buckthorn. Many thanks for assisting us in keeping the preserve healthy.

Volunteers from Saint Johns Lutheran Church tackled the buckthorn along Holloway during their God's Work Our Hands Day, September 11th. This really opened up the view to the pond. Thank you for your work.

A hard-working youth group from Emmaus Lutheran Church, removed invasive burdock from the preserve. This is the plant that leaves burs on your cloths and in your dog's fur. This is a good project for youth groups. If you have a group and would like to do a service project in the next few weeks let us know because there are more plants that need to be removed.

Two of the duck boxes had Hooded Mergansers, 9 young fledged from one box and 10 from the other. Another box currently has a wood duck sitting on a dozen eggs. The 5 feathered Chickadees will fledge soon. The Bluebird eggs have just been layed in the past week.
