Yesterday evening, MCFRS responded to a residential kitchen fire on Club Hill Drive in Germantown. The fire was reported at approximately 5:15 p.m. after a passing motorist spotted smoke coming from the home and called 911.

Firefighters quickly arrived and removed two dogs from the residence. One large dog was found in distress and required emergency resuscitation efforts by firefighters.

Thanks to the crew's swift actions, the dog was successfully revived. No injuries to residents were reported.

This incident is a reminder that kitchen fires can spread rapidly and put both people and pets at risk. Never leave cooking unattended, keep combustible items away from stovetops, and ensure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms on every level.

If you have pets, include them in your family's emergency escape plan and make sure responders can quickly identify that animals may be inside the home.

🚫 Things You Should Never Hear a Probationary Firefighter Say | Part 3: “I don’t ride the ambulance.”

In MCFRS, every firefighter is also an EMT or paramedic. While structure fires may be what first sparked your interest in the job, the reality is that our department responds to thousands of medical emergencies every year.

As a junior firefighter, you’ll likely spend much of your time assigned to an EMS transport unit. Those calls build your patient care skills, sharpen your decision-making, strengthen your communication, and teach you how to perform under pressure. Every medical emergency is another opportunity to become a better firefighter.

👉🏼There isn’t a “fire side” and an “EMS side.” They’re both part of the job.

🚫 Things You Should Never Hear a Probationary Firefighter Say | Part 2: “How was I supposed to know? No one came and got me.”

As a probationary firefighter, one of the most important skills you can develop is situational awareness.

Know what’s happening around the firehouse, and be where you’re supposed to be before someone has to tell you. Whether it’s training, chores, apparatus checks, or preparing for a call, no one should have to track you down to get you involved.

The expectation isn’t that you know everything. It’s that you’re present, paying attention, and ready to help and learn.

Things You Should Never Hear a Probationary Firefighter Say | Part 1: “Someone else will get it.”

The quickest way to earn the trust of your shift on the fireground starts with your tasks in the firehouse.

The little things matter. Answer the phone, fold the towels, make the coffee, restock the supplies, and take initiative without being asked.

No task is beneath you, and no one should have to wonder if you’ll step up. When your crew sees you consistently taking care of the small things around the station, they’ll have confidence that you’ll take care of the big things.
