North Olmsted VFW Post 7647

North Olmsted VFW Post 7647 The VFW exists to serve our veterans, the military, and our communities through advocacy, enrichment activities and social interaction.

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together an

d formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November, 2010. Annually, the 2.1 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary contribute more than 11 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. From providing $2.5 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Veterans Administration to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there. Our mission is to be a genesis for fostering camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans. We ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.

On this day in 1984, the only American Unknown Soldier from the Vietnam War is laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC, attended by 250,000. President Reagan, named honorary next-of-kin, delivers the eulogy at the hero’s funeral and urges greater efforts to locate the more than 2,400 service members still missing. In 1998 the remains were later identified as those of Air Force First Lieutenant Michael J. Blassie, at which point he was finally able to be laid to rest in St. Lous for a hometown burial.

As Memorial Day comes to a close, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make our events so meaningful.

Thank you to our VFW members, Auxiliary, Boy Scout Troop 664, Girl Scout Troops, and all of the community members who gave their time to help place flags, march, attend ceremonies, and honor our fallen heroes. A special thank you as well to Mercedes-Benz of North Olmsted for providing vehicles for the parade.

Your support and participation show that the spirit of remembrance and patriotism remains strong in our community.

Memorial Day is about remembering those who gave everything for our freedom, and because of all of you, their sacrifice was honored with the respect and dignity it deserves.

Thank you all for standing with us and helping keep their memory alive. 🇺🇸

On May 16th & 17th, members of our VFW Post & Auxiliary had the honor of attending the Chairman’s Reception and Commissioning Ceremony for the U.S.S. Cleveland (LCS-31).

It was a privilege to represent our Post and community during such a historic occasion and to witness the commissioning of a United States Navy vessel. Events like these serve as a reminder of the proud tradition of military service and the enduring strength of our armed forces.

We thank everyone who helped make the event possible and wish the crew of the U.S.S. Cleveland (LCS-31) fair winds and following seas as they begin their service to our nation.

God bless the United States Navy, our veterans, and the United States of America.
