On March 28th, the North Las Vegas Community Court held its fourth graduation ceremony. Chief Judge Kalani Hoo presented awards to three successful program participants. The program invocation was conducted by Pastor Kelcey West of Nehemiah Ministries Christian Church, and the guest speaker was Marcus Allen, owner of Masterpiece Barbershop.

Community Court is a neighborhood-focused program that uses partnerships within the justice system and the local community to stop crime before it starts. By taking an individualized approach to justice, a treatment model is created to help each defendant change their criminal lifestyle and become a contributing member of the community. Each participant receives treatment, vocational training, and mentorship, providing them with the tools that they need to successfully alter their behavior. Created in January 2014 by Chief Judge Kalani Hoo, North Las Vegas Community Court has successfully graduated 23 program participants since its inception.

Fifth-Graders Learn about Justice as Mock Trial Program Celebrates its 16th Year

Local fifth-graders will participate in a mock trial beginning at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in Department 2 at North Las Vegas Justice Court, 2428 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., Building ‘A,’ which is at the corner of Martin Luther King and Carey Avenue.

The mock trial is the highlight of the Kids in the Court program designed to teach children about the operation of the courts and to encourage them to stay in school. The Tuesday mock trial will feature a fictional case in which a student allegedly sprays another child’s bicycle with paint.

"I am very proud of Kids in the Court,” said North Las Vegas Judge Natalie L. Tyrrell, who will try the case in her Department 2 courtroom. “This is the 16th year the court has partnered with C.P. Squires, an at-risk school in North Las Vegas. The program educates fifth-graders about the judicial system, law-related careers and the importance of staying in school. To maximize their time at the court, I go to the school the week before and present a PowerPoint on the three branches of government.”

“It is a fun program where the students get to meet all the players involved here at the court,” Tyrrell added. “They get to tour the court, including the holding cells, which is always most exciting. They get to participate as defendant, witness and jurors in a mock trial. I have received much positive feedback from school staff and parents. It is exciting to hear the students talk about new goals for themselves.”

At 11:30 a.m., the students will arrive at the court and learn about law-related careers. The mock trial will begin at 12:15 p.m. and is expected to last 45 minutes. A courthouse tour will follow the mock trial and career talks.
