To bridge the gap between emerging commercial technologies and government research programs, the NNSS utilizes a unique federal contracting vehicle: the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA).

NNSA partnered with law enforcement partners across the country, and deployed 200+ Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) professionals to protect the FIFA World Cup in the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest-ever preventative radiological and nuclear detection mission.

NEST personnel from the Radiological Assistance Program (RAP) – America’s premier first responder organization for assessing radiological incidents – fanned out across the country to protect World Cup venues using advanced radiation detection systems.

The mission was the result of years of planning with federal, state, local, tribal, and international partners. It was made possible by the dedicated workforce, who left their families and daily roles at labs, plants and sites nationwide to serve. 🇺🇸

NNSS employees recently completed the 2026 Aviation Safety Officer Workshop, supporting a broad initiative to elevate safety practices across the entire federal fleet, including our Remote Sensing Laboratory aircraft.

Did you know? Before NASA’s astronauts make their historic return to the moon in 2028, they train in the rugged terrain of the NNSS. Recently, Clark County School District STEM educators and Georgia Tech students had the opportunity to step into those same astronaut boots and complete the Lunar Surface Operations Course at the NNSS’ Nevada Space Proving Grounds.

After supporting U.S. security for over three decades, securing events including presidential inaugurations, conventions and even the Super Bowl, an NNSA Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) twin-engine Bell 412 HP helicopter has been retired and donated to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.

A key component of NEST, the NNSS-operated Aerial Measuring System (AMS) is a rapid-response fleet equipped with specialized radiation-detection technology.
