North Haven Hoops, 1962–1963
A look back at the 1962–63 basketball season from the pages of The Pilot at North Haven High School. While the North Haven Hawks battled hard through a challenging season, the Hawkettes were undefeated, bringing home victory after victory.
Traveling to games in Rockport, Warren, Appleton, and Vinalhaven, both teams showed determination, teamwork, and island pride despite weather cancellations and small team sizes. One highlight noted by student writer Raymond Haskell (“65”) was the Hawkettes winning an exciting game in Appleton while playing over half the game with only five players on the court.
“We were very fortunate to have six games this year as it is quite difficult to plan games on account of the weather.”
We are excited to share photographs of the 1962–63 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams alongside this story from the archives. Do you recognize any of the players? Share your memories with us below.
Below is the The Pilot piece in full.
THE PILOT 1963
Sports Events Around N. H. H. S.
December 1, 1962—The boys and girls basketball teams of North Haven High School opened their season with Christian School of Glen Cove. The games were played at the Rockport Gym. The boys having only five players and the girls having eight players. The girls played first winning an exciting game by a score of 36-27. The boys put up a good fight but the height overpowered them with a score of 47-12.
December 4, 1962—Both of the Vinalhaven teams came to North Haven for our first home game. The boys watched the girls take an easy win over the Vinalhaven lassies, with a score of 33-11. The Vinalhaven boys decided to make things even by winning with a score of 47-12.
December 8, 1962—We traveled to Warren and again the girls won by a score of 40-23. The boys tried very hard and lost by a score of 34-16.
December 15, 1962—We again went to Warren. The girls having their full team, but the boys losing one of their players, so having to have Gary Beverage play for a replacement, although he had not had much experience he played a very good game. The boys put up a very good fight but lost by a score of 58-29. The girls winning again by a score of 41-20, this making the fourth straight win.
January 11, 1963—Both boys and girls teams traveled to Appleton. The girls playing first. This was a very exciting game as they played for over half a game with five players, but still won by a score of 48-44. The boys again played a terrific game, but lost by a score of 55-31.
January 18, 1963—Both teams went to Vinalhaven and this being the last game of the season. The girls won again by a score of 29-24. The boys again played a very good game but lost by a 68-22. This ended our basketball season for another year. We were very fortunate to have six games this year as it is quite difficult to plan games on account of the weather. We had three more games scheduled which had to be canceled because of rough weather.
The North Haven Hawks may not have had a very successful year in wins, but gained a lot of experience. They started out with three inexperienced players, but next year while losing only one player should have a much better season.
The North Haven Hawkettes had a very successful season, winning every game. Next year they are losing only one player also and are looking forward to another successful year.
