Sunshine, sandy toes, and salty air… this crab craft is bringing major summer vibes! Layer paper “sand” and sparkling blue water before adding a bright red crab scuttling along the beach. It’s the perfect way to kick off a season filled with flip-flops and sunny-day fun. Happening all weekend in MakerSpace.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED (adult supervision needed):
Large plastic soda bottle, knife/scissors (adult), permanent marker, ruler, duct tape, small rocks

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. With adult help, cut your bottle 1/3 of the way down. See the above picture.

2. With the ruler, measure increments of an inch from the inside base and mark the outside of the bottle with the Sharpie. Mark up to 5 inches.

3. Place a handful of small rocks in the base of the rain gauge.

4. Place the top piece upside down in the bottle. See the above picture. Secure the edges together.

5. Place your rain gauge on a flat surface outside where rain can collect and wait for the next rainfall!

History of the Rain Gauge:

There is a history of measuring rain in India, Palestine, China, and Korea; some as early as 400-500 BC, but they appear to be more isolated incidents. Korea invented the first standardized rain gauge in 1441. This was probably invented to help rice grow.

Nature has its own light show—and now your kids can create one too! Fireflies use their blinking patterns to communicate. Some are saying 'Hey there!' while others might be flashing 'Back off!'—kind of like texting, but glowier and with waaaay fewer emojis. Happening Friday in the MakerSpace.

The ice cream man’s got nothing on this craft. Kids will have a blast building their dream treat on Thursday and drooling over their imaginary flavors. Just don’t blame us when they ask for the real thing… Sorry!

Wednesday’s Makerspace is all about Alma Thomas’s art. Each child starts with a circle placed somewhere on their paper and builds outward using rectangular and square shapes, creating patterns. Lines shift, repeat, and evolve as they go, giving each child the freedom to experiment with movement, balance, and design.
