Tonight, County Council approved the first of three readings of the proposed 2026 Transportation Sales Tax referendum, moving the measure one step closer to a potential countywide vote this November.

There’s still time for public input: Council will hold a public hearing during their meeting on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., so residents can learn more about the proposed program and share feedback before additional readings move forward. Amendments may be made at any point up to third reading.

Through the end of June, we're proud to be covering 100% of adoption fees for county residents to adopt eligible shelter dogs and cats at Pet Helpers Adoption Shelter and Spay/Neuter Clinic on James Island. ❤️

They don’t know they’re part of a campaign.

They just know they’re waiting.

Waiting for the leash clipped onto their collar.
Waiting for the couch they can finally call theirs.
Waiting for someone to look at them and say, “That’s my dog.”
“That’s my cat.”
“That’s my family.” ❤️

Today, we are proud to announce Homeward Bound — an unprecedented partnership between Pet Helpers and Charleston County aimed at helping more shelter pets find the loving homes they deserve.

Through June 30, Charleston County will be sponsoring adoption fees for eligible shelter dogs and cats 4 months and older for qualifying Charleston County residents.

But this campaign is about so much more than sponsored adoption fees.

It’s about second chances.
It’s about making meaningful matches.
It’s about helping families find the pet they didn’t know they were missing.
And most importantly — it’s about getting animals out of kennels and into homes where they belong.

Our team remains committed to thoughtful matchmaking and lifelong placements because every animal deserves the right fit, not just the next fit.

So if you’ve been thinking about adopting… this is your sign. Your new best friend may already be waiting for you. 🐾

Today, Charleston County leaders and community partners officially broke ground on the new Charleston County EMS headquarters, a major investment in the future of emergency medical services in our community.

For the first time, Charleston County EMS will have a centralized headquarters, bringing training, logistics, special operations, vehicle storage, and administration together under one roof. The more than 130,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will improve coordination, readiness, and service across the county.

As the region continues to grow, this project reflects our long-term commitment to supporting the professionals who answer the call in life’s most critical moments so they can continue to do so with greater strength, speed, and unity for years to come.
