Employee Spotlight: Meet DeRae!

Today, we're excited to shine the spotlight on DeRae, our wonderful Customer Service Specialist in the Accounting Department!

If you've ever called the North Charleston Sewer District with a billing question, there's a good chance you've connected with DeRae. Her friendly voice, helpful attitude, and dedication to serving our customers make her an important part of the NCSD team.

Behind the scenes, DeRae keeps things moving by processing monthly customer bills, working closely with the Lines Department, and managing the District's annual grease trap billing for approximately 500 customers. She also follows up on customer questions and concerns, making sure people receive the assistance they need.

When we asked DeRae what she enjoys most about working at the District, her answer was simple: the people! She loves interacting with customers and coworkers and being part of a supportive team. She also appreciates the District's benefits, flexible work schedule, and the positive difference the new schedule has made in her work-life balance.

DeRae, thank you for bringing kindness, care, and dedication to everything you do. We're so grateful to have you on our team!

Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from restaurants and other food service businesses can create serious problems if they enter the sewer system. FOG inspections help ensure businesses are following proper practices for collecting, storing, and disposing of grease to prevent blockages and protect the community’s wastewater infrastructure.

During an inspection, wastewater professionals check that grease interceptors and other prevention measures are properly maintained and operating as intended. These inspections help identify potential issues before they lead to sewer backups, costly repairs, or disruptions to business operations.

By properly managing FOG, businesses help protect their own plumbing systems, reduce environmental impacts, and support a reliable wastewater system for the entire community.

As we head into Labor Day weekend, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank the hardworking people who help keep our community moving every day.

We’re especially grateful for our dedicated NCSD employees! From the field to the plant to our administrative offices, your hard work and commitment make a difference every day. Thank you for all that you do to serve our customers and keep our community running.

What a great way to connect!

The Employee Engagement Committee recently held its very first Employee Connect event, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible support and turnout!

Employees had the opportunity to meet and get to know new coworkers, share ideas, and talk about the kind of workplace they want NCSD to be. Most importantly, it was a chance to connect, listen, laugh, and build relationships across our organization.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated, volunteered, and helped make our first Employee Connect a success! Your energy and willingness to engage are what make events like this possible.

Congratulations, Nick Crepeau!

Please join us in congratulating Nick Crepeau on his promotion to the new Plant Shift Supervisor!

Nick joined the District in 2020 as a Collection System Operator and has continued to grow through several roles, becoming a Plant Operator in 2024. Along the way, he earned his “A” VCC Certification and “A” Biological License
We’re proud to see Nick’s hard work and dedication recognized with this well-deserved promotion. Congratulations, Nick!

Sewer pipes are placed underground to protect the infrastructure, keep communities safe, and allow wastewater to flow by gravity whenever possible. Being underground protects pipes from weather, traffic, and accidental damage while keeping neighborhoods and businesses free from exposed sewer lines.

Underground placement also helps maintain proper temperatures, prevents odors, and allows wastewater to safely travel from homes and businesses to the treatment facility. Because many sewer systems rely on gravity, pipes are installed at specific depths and slopes to move wastewater efficiently throughout the community.

💻 Meet Stephen Njuguna!

When something isn't working, chances are Stephen is already figuring out how to fix it!

As part of NCSD’s three-person IT team, Stephen helps employees across the District with everything from hardware and software issues to technology support. He also stays up to date on the latest advancements and enjoys finding new solutions that can benefit NCSD.

Stephen recently completed our district-wide computer and tablet hardware upgrade and is now working on projects to modernize our fuel management system and improve how we store and access employee files.

But what Stephen enjoys most about working at NCSD isn’t just the technology; it’s helping people.

“It’s rewarding to solve someone’s problem and leave them with a smile.”

We appreciate Stephen and all he does to keep our team connected, supported, and working efficiently!

Bacteria play an important role in the wastewater treatment process by naturally breaking down and removing organic matter from wastewater. These helpful microorganisms consume pollutants, waste materials, and other organic substances that enter the sewer system from homes and businesses.

At the wastewater treatment facility, bacteria are carefully managed in treatment tanks where they work together with other processes to clean the water. As they break down waste, they help remove harmful materials and improve water quality before the treated water is safely returned to the environment.

These microscopic organisms are an essential part of the treatment process, helping turn wastewater into cleaner water while protecting public health and the environment.
