The hearts of the members of Charleston County Rescue Squad are with the men and women of the Columbia Police Department after the loss of one of their own in a shooting earlier today. We grieve with the family, the loving wife and their two children, and are praying for the recovery of another officer also injured in the incident. We stand with you and are here for you all.

On Saturday, August 15, Charleston County Rescue was called to the Charleston County Landfill on Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley for a large vegetation and brush fire.

Our Rehab 602 responded to support crews working the fire, providing a climate-controlled space, ice, water, and other hydration needs as firefighters cycled between the fireground and rehab. Charleston County EMS also assisted with medical monitoring for crews on scene.

As operations continued, our team was asked to provide additional support with Task Force 614. Using one of our Mules, crews transported firefighters and equipment to and from the fireground, helping move fresh crews in and exhausted crews out of the operational area.

With the heat, prolonged operations, and approaching storms creating additional challenges, our members worked alongside Charleston County EMS and area fire departments to keep crews supported throughout the incident. Fire suppression operations continued into the evening before crews were released and the fire was turned over to the landfill contractor for continued monitoring and overhaul.

Early this morning, CCVRS responded with our Rehab Unit to support firefighters operating at a large apartment fire on Ashley River Road at the Middleton Cove Apartments.

The fire involved an 18-unit apartment building and required a coordinated response from Charleston, North Charleston, and Saint Andrews Fire Departments, Charleston County EMS, Charleston Police Department, and other assisting agencies. Multiple residents were assisted to safety, and the incident displaced numerous families.

Our Rehab Unit provided a climate-controlled environment along with hydration, cooling, and medical monitoring, helping ensure firefighters could safely recover between operational assignments and remain ready to continue their work.

We appreciate the teamwork demonstrated by all responding agencies during this challenging incident, and our thoughts are with the residents affected by the fire as they begin the recovery process.

Last night, we completed chainsaw training to sharpen the skills we rely on in the field. Our department uses chainsaws during patient rescue operations and to clear roads after storms and other severe weather events.

Staying current with our equipment training is essential to ensuring every member is prepared to respond safely, confidently, and effectively when the call comes. By continually training and refining our skills, we're ready to serve our community whenever and wherever we're needed.

This morning, members of CCVRS trained alongside Charleston Fire Department's Tower 102 and North Charleston Fire Department's Rescue 202, strengthening the teamwork and coordination that are critical on emergency scenes.

The training began with a demonstration of the lifting capabilities of our Heavy Rescue 608, showcasing equipment and techniques used to stabilize and lift heavy objects during complex rescue incidents. We then transitioned to vehicle extrication, working together on multiple scenarios to sharpen our skills, improve communication, and build the strong working relationships that make a difference when lives are on the line.

We appreciate Charleston Fire Department and North Charleston Fire Department for the opportunity to train together. Regular joint training helps ensure we’re prepared to respond as one team when our community needs us most.

Last night, the Charleston County Rescue Squad was dispatched to a residential structure fire off Ingleside Boulevard near I-26 in North Charleston.

Fire spread between two neighboring homes, leaving both with significant damage as North Charleston Fire Department worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from extending further through the neighborhood. Charleston County EMS supported operations throughout the incident.

CCVRS responded with our rehab trailer, providing water and hydration for firefighters working in the summer heat as crews remained on scene through suppression and overhaul.

Our thoughts are with the families affected by this fire, and we’re grateful for the coordinated efforts of everyone who responded.

Today, as our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of American Independence, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of those who fought to secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

As you gather with family and friends, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely. Stay hydrated, use caution with fireworks, watch out for one another, and never hesitate to call 911 if an emergency arises.

Our volunteers are proud to be serving alongside our public safety partners throughout the holiday, helping keep our community safe. We'll be supporting the fireworks display with Isle of Palms Fire Department today, if you see our team be sure to say hi!

Last weekend, members of CCVRS were honored to support the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island (Carolina Day) at Fort Moultrie alongside the National Park Service and our public safety partners.

The Battle of Sullivan’s Island, fought on June 28, 1776, was one of the first major American victories of the Revolutionary War and helped inspire South Carolina’s iconic palmetto symbol.

Our team provided our Rehab Trailer, offering a cool, air-conditioned space for both event attendees and the dedicated living historians throughout the weekend. With the summer heat, the trailer provided a welcome place to cool down, rehydrate, and recover.

The celebration was made even more memorable with an incredible flyover by the Red Arrows, adding a special tribute to this historic milestone.

We’re proud to have been part of this once-in-a-generation event and grateful for the opportunity to support the National Park Service and help keep everyone safe throughout the celebration.
