COBBLESTONE CAN’T BUY OCEANSIDE WITH ICE CREAM! 🍦

Today, approximately 30 Oceanside Landing residents put on their union shirts, picked up their signs, and stood together to boycott their Cobblestone community's ice cream social.

Out of hundreds of residents only 3-4 people got a cone from Cobblestone, the rest standing in solidarity with Oceanside Landing Tenant Union.

Why? Because Oceanside Landing tenants don’t want sweet treats! They want Cobblestone to meet with their union about the 16% increases and the instability of being placed on month to month leases.

Tenants and concerned community members have sent more than 200 emails and placed calls to Cobblestone’s customer care line. Yet, Cobblestone continues to ignore the Oceanside Landing Tenant Union and its request for a meeting.

Ice cream cannot make unfair rent increases affordable.

Luncheons cannot provide housing stability.

And token gestures cannot replace a collectively bargained agreement.

Today, tenants made it clear: Their community is not for sale, their union is not going away, and they will continue organizing until Cobblestone comes to the table.

Corporate greed has a name: Cobblestone Real Estate.

The Charleston area still has one of the highest eviction rates in the country - 18 out of every 100 renters have received an eviction filing in the last year according to the Eviction Lab.

Cobblestone Properties : THE DEADLINE IS TOMORROW. MEET WITH THE UNION.

On July 28, seniors at Oceanside Landing made SC history when they publicly launched the Oceanside Landing Tenant Union and demanded that their corporate landlord, Cobblestone Real Estate, come to the table.

Their demands are simple: Meet with the union. Negotiate a fair collective lease. Stop the excessive rent increases.

Residents asked Cobblestone to meet with them by August 12.

Tomorrow is August 12.

Still. No. Meeting.

But Oceanside Landing tenants aren't sitting around waiting.

🔥 Over the last week, tenants have sent 100+ emails directly to Cobblestone demanding they meet with their union.

Now we need the PUBLIC to turn up the pressure.

Cobblestone thought they could buy a 55+ community, jack up lot rents, move seniors onto month-to-month leases, and ignore them when they organized.

They thought wrong.

Corporate landlords should not get to prey on seniors, squeeze every last dollar out of their fixed incomes, and then refuse to even sit across the table from the people whose homes their profits depend on.

Earlier today, residents of Oceanside Landing Mobile Home Park held a press conference to speak publicly about excessive lot rent increases. The park was sold to Cobblestone Real Estate in 2022, and Cobblestone, an Illinois based company, promised the senior citizens and veterans who owned homes at the park that the lot rent would only increase 5 to 7 % each year. This year lot rent was increased 16% for longtime residents. After Cobblestone’s refusal to meet with them, tenants organized and formed a tenant union.

Homeowners received notice in November 2025 of lot rent increases ranging from 8% to 16%, and that their current lease would roll over, meaning no written lease. Many long-term residents live primarily on Social Security Benefits. Residents viewed this as the last affordable housing option in South Carolina. With these increases, many must choose between rent and groceries.

“Now, many of us are making impossible choices just to stay in the homes we planned to live the rest of our lives. Some of us have turned our thermostats up in the summer, even when it's uncomfortable...Others are relying on food pantries for the first time in their lives. That is not how anyone should spend their retirement,” Arvis Emmons, Oceanside Landing Resident.

Residents don’t have any option to move easily, as the high lot rents make the park unattractive to buyers, and moving their home elsewhere cost over $8-10K.

With support from SC Tenant Union , tenants have organized together to form the Oceanside Landing Tenant Union to demand a negotiated written lease, a reduction in current rent and a cap of future increases.

'A group of residents representing at least half of the community at the time of the property sale formed a tenant union, with support from SC Tenant Union , to call for more time and additional financial incentives.

The Ferndale Mobile Home Tenant Union said the agreement gives residents an opportunity to relocate with dignity instead of urgency."

Ferndale Mobile Home Park residents have reached an agreement with the new landowner giving them more time to move off the property. (Full story below.)

SC Tenant Union x Ferndale Mobile Home Tenant Union

"The tenant union formed as more than a dozen residents pushed for additional time to relocate and increased financial support, noting many families in the park are elderly, disabled or living on fixed incomes."

After weeks of organizing, residents at Ferndale Mobile Home Park in North Charleston have reached an agreement with the property’s new owner, New Tide LLC, that provides more time and added relocation support as families prepare to leave the community.
