Last evening, the members of the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company, along with mutual aid companies from Erma, Villas, and Rio Grande Fire Company as the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC), were dispatched to the 600 block of Town Bank Road for a reported residential structure fire.
While responding, fire personnel were advised of possible entrapment within the dwelling. Assistant Chief 61 arrived first on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire showing, along with an updated report of multiple occupants still inside the residence.
Engine 61 arrived shortly after and crews immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack on the bulk of the fire while additional crews conducted primary and secondary searches along with ventilation operations. During the primary search, the structure was reported all clear and all occupants were confirmed safely out of the building.
Due to the reported entrapment and heavy fire conditions, a 2nd Alarm was struck bringing additional manpower to the scene from the Cape May City Fire Department and Green Creek Fire Company. West Cape May Fire Company provided township coverage during the incident. The Cape May County Fire Coordinator also responded to the scene.
Fire crews operated on scene for approximately 31/2 hours before clearing and returning to service.
The fire is currently under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office along with the Lower Township Bureau of Fire Safety.

Units responding included:

1st Alarm:
Town Bank
Erma
Villas
Rio Grande (RIC)
MYAC Rehab

2nd Alarm:

Cape May City
Green Creek
West Cape May
CMC Fire Coordinator

All companies did an outstanding job and worked together seamlessly during the incident. We would like to thank all mutual aid companies and agencies that responded to assist.

Members are always wanted. If you are interested in serving your community, stop by your local township fire company, speak with the men and women who volunteer their time, and pick up an application!

We’re incredibly grateful to Harpoons on the Bay for turning a difficult moment into something positive for our community.

After last week’s fire, Jeff & Brady didn’t hesitate to give back and support our volunteer fire company — and that means a lot to all of us.

This Saturday, a portion of their food and drink sales will be donated to Town Bank Volunteer Fire Co.

If you’re able, stop by, grab a bite or a drink, and help support a local business that supports its first responders. 🚒

Community supporting community at its best.

Hello HarpoonsNation —
Over the past few days, we’ve had a lot of time to reflect on how fortunate we were when a fire broke out behind our beloved Tiki Bar last week.
When it happened, the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company — just a few blocks from us — was on scene within minutes and contained it before it had a chance to spread.
At the same time, we had incredible support from surrounding departments — Villas, Erma, Rio Grande, and Cape May City — all there and ready in case things escalated. That kind of response reminds you what community really means.
Now it’s our turn to show up and give back to our hometown fire company.
This Saturday, May 9, we’ll be supporting the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company. Details below.
We hope you’ll come out and be part of it.

Early this morning at 2:56am, Townbank firefighters were dispatched for a report of smoke in the area of 91 Beach Drive in North Cape May. Upon arrival of Chief 61, a detached “out building” was found to be fully involved and rapidly spreading to the adjacent tiki bar. A working fire box was transmitted bringing in additional units from Erma, Villas, Cape May, and Rio Grande Fire companies along with the Lower Township Fire Official and the Cape May County Fire Marshall’s Office. First arriving units contained the fire to the building or origin with minor extension to the tiki bar. Crews extinguished the fire and overhauled the scene for approximately 3 hours. The fire is being investigated by the Lower Township Bureau of Fire Safety in conjunction with the Cape May County Fire Marshall’s Office and Lower Township Police Department.

Lower Township honors fallen officer David C. Douglass, Sr.
Wednesday, February 18, 2026, will mark the 32nd anniversary of the death of Lower Township Police Officer David C. Douglass, Sr., who was killed in the line of duty, after exchanging gunfire with a suspect who had just burglarized a home and then set it on fire.

Officer Douglass was dispatched to a suspicious person call in the area of North Cape May. As he pursued a burglary suspect on foot, the suspect turned and shot him. Officer Douglass was able to return fire, striking the suspect in the hand and was able to make it back to his patrol car to call for assistance, but did not survive the attack.

Following an intensive investigation, Lower Township Police, along with several other assisting agencies, arrested the actor in New York City, in April of 1994.

"Let us not forget his efforts, let us not forget his name, and please let us not forget his family."

The Lower Township Police Department will continue to honor Officer Douglass who laid down his life in the line of duty. On this day, let us reflect on the sacrifice and contributions that David C. Douglass had on the law enforcement community, along with many other law enforcement officers, who also made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve the citizens of their communities.

The flags at Township Hall and the Police Department will be flown at half-staff on this day in memory of his sacrifice and service. A memorial wreath will be placed at the gravesite located at the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, (780 Seashore Rd, Cold Spring, NJ 08204).

At approximately 7:15 p.m., dispatch will transmit Officer Douglass’s End of Watch broadcast. During this time, all fire sirens in the township will be activated, in memory of Douglass, who was also a Town Bank Firefighter.
