Each year, the Stark County Firefighters Association hosts its annual EMS Breakfast during National EMS Week to recognize the dedication and service of EMS professionals throughout our community.

This year, our own Captain Gary Coen was recognized by Aultman Health System for his many years of service and contributions — not only to our department, but also to the Stark County Firefighters Association and his continued involvement with the annual EMS Breakfast.

Congratulations, Captain Coen, on this well-deserved recognition and award. Thank you for your dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving our community!

Today, the North Canton Fire Department had the honor of helping make a little boy’s dream come true.

We welcomed the Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, along with a very special young boy named Dominic and his family, for an unforgettable day filled with excitement and smiles.

The day began with donuts, juice, and coffee graciously provided by Dough Co. Doughnuts & Coffee of North Canton. They even surprised Dominic with a giant donut personalized with his name on it.

From there, Dominic got to witness Metro Life Flight make a special landing at Dogwood Pool. To make things official, he and his family then traveled to City Hall, where Dominic assisted Major Buzzard in lowering the City Hall flag in honor of National Police Week.

Surrounded by family, friends, and city personnel, Mayor Stroia officially swore Dominic in as an honorary City of North Canton Firefighter and Police Officer.

Ready to begin his duties, Dominic visited NORCOM dispatch, where he met the dispatchers and toured the police department and cruisers. He then headed to North Canton Fire Station 1, where he was fitted for turnout gear and explored several fire units.

Back at Dogwood Pool, Dominic had the opportunity to tour the Canton Regional SWAT MRAP, the Metro Life Flight helicopter, and additional North Canton Fire Department units. Firefighter Dominic even “responded” to a simulated emergency call, where he used a fire extinguisher — with assistance — to put out a simulated fire.

One of his favorite parts of the day was riding in the department’s Gator with lights and sirens and getting hands-on experience with a fire hose.

The day concluded with a delicious lunch generously provided by Chick-fil-A North Canton, where Dominic shared a meal with members of the North Canton Fire Department, North Canton Police Department, and the Canton Regional SWAT Team.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Dough Co. Doughnuts & Coffee of North Canton, Chick-fil-A North Canton, Metro Life Flight, the Canton Regional SWAT Association, the North Canton Police Department, and The City of North Canton, Ohio for helping make Dominic’s day so special. Thank you to Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana for having us be apart of this magical day.

It was truly a memorable day for everyone involved, and we are grateful to have been part of making Dominic’s wish come true.
