Village of North Aurora

Village of North Aurora The Village of North Aurora is positioned along the Fox River in Kane County, Illinois. The brothers found work as carpenters and millwrights.

Originally known as Schneider’s Crossing, North Aurora began with the arrival of two brothers in search of a location to build a saw mill. John Peter and Nicholas Schneider left their home near Frankfurt on-the-Rhine around 1823, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1824. In 1832, Joh

n Peter and his family traveled westward via rivers and Lake Michigan to the state of Michigan. They took up their journey again in 1833, and got as far west as what is now called Naperville. Nicholas joined his brother shortly thereafter, and they built a sawmill at the mouth of Blackberry Creek near Yorkville. Nicholas remained on the property, but John continued on into the Fox River Valley, settling with his family on the east side of the river on a hill near the site of the present Village Hall. In 1837, a dam was constructed to provide power to the mill John Peter had built. The commercial activity surrounding the mill attracted more families to the area. By the turn of the 19th century approximately 300 people lived in town. In 1905, North Aurora (the name of the local post office) was incorporated as a village. In the early 20th century, Aurora became a hub of industry and railroading. Some of the railroad workers chose to live in North Aurora, triggering the Village’s moderate but steady growth until the 1960s. The 1960s ushered in an era when the character of the whole Fox River Valley changed; it transformed from a relatively local, freestanding economy where residents lived and worked into a more suburban experience where residents commuted to job centers located east of the valley. At first, residents had access to jobs through the commuter train system. Later they drove to job sites that had moved out of the metropolitan core and to areas surrounding the expressways. The movement of jobs continues to this day, and it continues to generate residential growth in North Aurora. Located in the heart of Chicago’s western suburbs, North Aurora is quaintly situated along the Fox River in Kane County. Only 40 minutes west of the City of Chicago, residents of North Aurora enjoy direct access to I-88, Route 31, Route 25, Route 56 (Butterfield Road), Randall Road, and Orchard Road. The proximity of these major suburban routes makes for easy traveling around town and into Chicago’s metropolitan center. While definitely a Midwestern climate, North Aurora is far enough south to avoid the blistering cold temperatures found further north. Residents experience snowy winters ranging from about 20° to 30° Fahrenheit. Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 70° to 80° Fahrenheit. Precipitation ordinarily peaks in the month of August which averages about 4.3”. January is the peak month of snowfall averaging up to 11” of snow.

🚧Construction Project Updates: June 12, 2026

🔶2026 Road Improvement Project

This week the contractor completed the pavement removal and aggregate base repairs on streets south of Bauer (McDuffee, Plante, Berman). They are planning to finish the remainder of the concrete on Friday (weather permitting), but if they are unable to, they will finish up on Monday.

The contractor completed the final layer of asphalt on the streets north of Bauer (Western, Sterkel, Kelley, Leonard, Jorstad).

On Tuesday, the contractor plans to begin placing the first layer of asphalt on the streets south of Bauer. This whole area is expected to take about three days to place the first layer. After the first layer of asphalt is placed on all the streets, they will begin on the final layer of asphalt.

🔶Orchard Gateway Boulevard Intersection Improvements and Resurfacing Project

This week the contractor placed traffic control and began saw cutting the concrete curb and sidewalk that is planned for replacement.

Next week, the contractor will be continuing saw cutting the concrete curb and sidewalk. Late in the week they plan to begin removal of the concrete curb and sidewalk.

Construction has begun on the Veterans Memorial. The new memorial is expected to be in place prior to Veterans Day, and will feature a revamped memorial wall, landscaping, water fountain display, and aluminum flags featuring personalized inscriptions.

As you can see in the photos, all inscribed bricks are being carefully collected and will be coordinated for a return to the original owner. All of those brick inscriptions will automatically be included on the updated memorial's engraved plaque feature.

For anyone who may be interested in purchasing an engraved plaque for the new memorial, the Village is currently offering an early bird special (while supplies last) for orders placed by Friday, June 19, 2026. The cost per plaque is $50. Plaques purchased after this date will have a cost of $150. Space is limited and submissions will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Please find further details and the submission form here: https://northaurora.org/community/veterans-memorial-plaque-program
