Sept 17, 1862 is remembered as the bloodiest day in American History. The Battle of Antietam took place over 12 hours, with approximately 23,000 killed, wounded, missing, or captured. At the Lower Bridge specifically, there were more than 600 casualties. Hours of brutal combat at the critical bridge finally broke when the Twin 51st infantry regiments of Pennsylvania and New York began a 4th assault on the Confederates there. With a secured position behind a stonewall and fence, they launched a final push and succeeded in capturing the bridge. It is now known as the Burnside Bridge after Union Army Major General Ambrose E. Burnside.
