ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT!!!

This month's animal spotlight is our Virginia Opossums, Pearl and Minnie.

These are some of the most misunderstood animals we have at Vaughn Deer Farm and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Although they may not look like it, Virginia Opossums are amazingly clean animals and spend a great deal of time grooming themselves throughout the day.

Virginia Opossums are also the only native marsupial in North America meaning they carry their young, which are called Joey's, in a pouch located on their belly.

Opossums are also part of nature's clean up crew. Along with small rodents, reptiles, and various bugs, a vast majority of the Virginia Opossums diet is carrion, already dead animals.

Virginia Opossums are also resistant to Lyme disease, rabies, and even snake bites, making them an important part of our natural ecosystem.

VAUGHN DEER FARM SEASON OPENING!!!
MAY 16TH 10AM - 5PM
MAY 17TH 12PM - 5PM
OPEN EVERY WEEKEND!!!

Now is the exciting time of spring where new life is being welcomed into the world. With lots of baby animals from the deer to the frogs creatures great and small are having young this time of year.

The most common call that we get this time of year is about fawns, baby deer, that appears to have been abandoned by their mother. More often than not the mothers are close by and will return to their baby in a matter of time.

Fawns have amazing camouflage and no natural scent so they are very well protected from predators.

The best thing you can do for a fawn unless you are absolutely sure it is sick or injured is to leave them alone.
