Oklahoma’s heat is no joke, and staying safe takes more than just drinking water. 💧🌡️

When temperatures climb, keep these tips in mind:
• Give your body time to adjust. Heat tolerance builds gradually, so ease into strenuous outdoor work or activity after time away.
• Don’t rely on thirst alone. Drink fluids regularly when spending extended time in the heat.
• Watch for changes in behavior. Confusion, irritability or poor coordination can be signs of serious heat illness.
• Keep an eye on each other. Heat can affect judgment, making it harder for someone to recognize their own symptoms.
• Consider humidity and direct sun. Both can increase heat stress beyond what the temperature alone may suggest.

Know the signs, check on those around you and take precautions before heat becomes an emergency.

Here is more information on Cyclospora.

Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause illness. People may become sick after eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated. Cyclospora has sometimes been linked to fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Help reduce your risk:

• Wash hands before preparing food.
• Rinse produce under running water.
• Scrub firm produce with a clean brush.
• Refrigerate cut produce within two hours.
• Do not use soap or bleach on produce.

Washing produce can help remove dirt and some germs, but it may not remove all Cyclospora. Cooking produce is the best way to destroy the parasite.

The most common symptom is frequent, watery diarrhea. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, nausea, tiredness, loss of appetite, bloating, and weight loss. Contact a healthcare provider if you have symptoms.

Oklahoma Home & Community Education (OHCE) is a statewide organization with members in local communities across all 77 counties. Dedicated to lifelong learning and community service, OHCE empowers individuals by teaching valuable skills that enhance daily life. Through friendship, support, and shared knowledge, members work together to make a meaningful impact on their communities. Today, the Board of Cleveland County Commissioners recognized OHCE week and thanked representatives from the group for their many contributions to Cleveland County!
