Field Horsetail - will have two totally different looking stems each season. This is the first to emerge and will eventually die back only to return looking like a miniature pine tree, or a horse's tail. The plant has endured for 300 million years, and was once tree sized and dominant in the landscape. The stem contains a lot of silica and was used for polishing metal and wood.
