The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers joined partners from The Port of Virginia today to recognize a major milestone in the Norfolk Harbor Deepening Project.

During The Port of Virginia's Deepest, Widest Channel ribbon-cutting ceremony, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division Commander Col. Jesse Curry delivered remarks highlighting the importance of Norfolk Harbor to the nation's economy and national defense.

Completed through a partnership between USACE and The Port of Virginia, the project deepened and widened the federal navigation channel to accommodate larger vessels and ensure one of the nation's busiest ports remains ready to meet future demands.

Effective immediately, the north span of North Landing Bridge will open to vessel traffic only twice daily, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., due to mechanical issues. The south span remains operational and will continue opening every 30 minutes. Motorists should expect brief traffic delays during the scheduled north span openings. Today we celebrate our 251st anniversary!

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Since then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has responded to changing defense requirements and played an integral part in the development of the country. Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, and thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts for the Nation.

Here’s a look at the new traffic pattern now in place at the Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Eastbound traffic is now traveling on the new bridge span, while westbound traffic continues to use the old bridge as construction progresses.

Drivers traveling through the area should continue to stay alert, follow posted signage and pay close attention to the updated lane markings as the community adjusts to the new configuration.
