With the Town Election happening tomorrow, we were asked to re-post this explanation of the ballot question.

Happy voting all!

What Does the Question on the Town Election Ballot Mean?

At this Tuesday’s Town Election, Norfolk voters will be asked to decide on a debt exclusion related to the town’s share of the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Here is a plain language explanation of what Yes and No votes will do.

A YES vote means: the annual amount of the Tri-County building debt, which is based on enrollment and will vary year to year (this year it is $377,742), will be covered by a portion of an amount of taxes collected just for that purpose, and will stop being collected when the debt is paid off.

This is the same method that was used to cover the debt taken on for the King Philip Middle and High school renovations, which is ending this year. (This year, that debt equals $487,106).

A NO vote means: Norfolk will still get an annual assessment from the Tri-County district, based on enrollment, but to meet this expense in FY27, the town would use Stabilization Fund (the town’s “rainy day” fund) monies to pay for the assessment. The town would need to determine in future years how it chooses to pay this assessment.

The question needs a simple majority for passage.

Thank you, and remember to vote tommorow!, May 5th at the Freeman Kennedy school from 7am to 8pm.
