Coffee with a Cop this morning was pretty simple — a few good conversations, some quick hellos, and a chance to visit with people as they came and went. ☕👮‍♂️

A few folks stopped long enough to sit down and talk, others exchanged a few words while grabbing their coffee, and we also had a chance to visit with the Starbucks staff.

It doesn’t always take a big crowd to make something worthwhile. Sometimes it’s just about being available, being approachable, and taking a few minutes to connect with people in a normal setting.

Thanks to everyone who stopped to say hello, and thanks to the Starbucks staff for having us this morning.

🐾 The Goodest Boy at the Police Department is Retiring 🐾

After 35 dog years (5 human years) of dedicated service, K9 Kane is officially hanging up his vest!

Kane is trading in the police cruiser for the couch, going from chasing bad guys to chasing his favorite ball in his yard, and from sniffing out drugs to sniffing out where his humans hid the good treats. Instead of answering the call, he'll be answering a much more important question: "Who wants belly rubs?"

After years of protecting and serving, Kane gets to spend the rest of his days with his family being spoiled, loved, and simply enjoying life as a dog.

We thank Kane for his loyalty, courage, and dedication. Kane always gave it his all while faithfully serving alongside his handler, ensuring the safety of his fellow officers and the community of Norfolk each and every shift.

We proudly honor and celebrate K9 Kane on his well-deserved retirement!
Now go enjoy being a dog, you've more than earned it! 💙🐾

🚫 Don’t Dump It Down the Drain

Pouring grease, oil and fats into a sewer drain is against City Code and can cause problems for the sewer system and wastewater treatment process.

Please dispose of grease, oil and other waste properly instead of pouring it down a drain.

Help protect Norfolk’s sewer system.

A Norfolk man was arrested Sunday after police recovered a stolen fi***rm connected to a reported shooting at a Casey’s on West Benjamin Avenue.

On September 27, 2026, at approximately 7:56 a.m., Norfolk Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Georgia Avenue regarding two individuals reportedly sleeping in a garage. The individuals left the area prior to officers’ arrival but were located nearby a short time later.

One of the individuals, identified as Eric D. McCovery, 20, of Norfolk, was found to have an active felony warrant out of Texas with full extradition. McCovery fled on foot after being advised he was under arrest. Officers apprehended McCovery a short time later, and he was transported to the Madison County Jail.

During the subsequent investigation, officers were advised that McCovery had been involved in an argument with residents of the home on Georgia Avenue and had been looking for a fi***rm he believed had been taken from him while he was sleeping.

At approximately 10:11 a.m., the residents contacted the Norfolk Police Division after locating a fi***rm in the garage where McCovery had been sleeping. Officers also obtained information and video showing McCovery sleeping in the area where the fi***rm was recovered.

Investigators determined the fi***rm was connected to an incident earlier that morning at Casey’s, 1020 West Benjamin Avenue, where a vehicle’s windshield had been damaged by a gunshot. A spent 9mm shell casing was recovered from the vehicle, and investigators located a 9mm cartridge casing/jacket in the area of the Casey’s dumpsters.

The fi***rm, a Ta**us G2C 9mm handgun, was determined to have been reported stolen out of Omaha, Nebraska. McCovery has a prior felony conviction in Texas for assault on a peace officer/judge.

Mccovery was arrested for the Texas warrant, possession of a fi***rm by prohibited person, possession of a stole fi***rm and discharging a fi***rm at a vehicle. He was also cited for resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, two counts of criminal mischief, 2nd degree trespassing and minor in possession of alcohol. He was housed in the Madison County Jail.

Michigan State likes to run the ball and work the play-action pass.
Nebraska brought a quarterback who can run AND throw.

And judging by the way Husker fans travel, there could be quite a bit of red showing up in East Lansing Saturday.

PLAY ACTION? MORE LIKE PANIC ACTION.
Safe travels to everyone making the trip.
