Today we celebrate freedom while honoring the strength, resilience, and legacy of Black Americans throughout history. Juneteenth reminds us of how far we have come and how far we must go in the continued fight for justice, equality, and opportunity for all.

Let today be a time for reflection, education, celebration, and continued commitment to building a Commonwealth where freedom truly means freedom for all.

I recently had the opportunity to tour the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, Tidewater Tech’s main campus, and Tidewater Tech’s satellite campus, and I have to say, I was impressed! ✈️🔧⚙️

From aviation maintenance and welding to HVAC and skilled trades, it was incredible to see students getting hands-on training for careers that are in high demand and essential to our economy. The demonstrations were engaging, the equipment was impressive, and yes, I may have had a little too much fun during the tours. 😊

One thing that stood out to me, however, was the small number of women taking advantage of these opportunities. Ladies, there is room for you in these industries too! These careers offer excellent wages, strong career growth, and the chance to build, create, and innovate.

To all the young women considering their next steps: don’t count yourself out. Whether it’s aviation, welding, construction, manufacturing, or another skilled trade, there’s a place for you at the table and sometimes behind the controls, under the hood, or leading the team.

Thank you to the faculty, staff, and students for the warm welcome and for the important work you’re doing to prepare Virginia’s workforce of tomorrow.

Every child deserves to get to and from school safely. Every parent deserves peace of mind when their child steps into a crosswalk. And every driver has a responsibility to help make our streets safer.

That’s why I sponsored **SB84**.

This legislation is not about replacing crossing guards—it’s about giving our communities another tool to improve safety, increase accountability, and prevent tragedies before they happen. We cannot place a crossing guard at every intersection, but we can use technology responsibly to help protect pedestrians, especially our children.

Safe streets shouldn’t be a partisan issue. They should be a shared priority.

During Virginia Agriculture Week, there could not have been a more fitting place to celebrate the ceremonial signing of SB186 and SB522 than Pierce Farms in Surry County.

As a Black-owned farm with deep roots in Virginia agriculture, Pierce Farms served as a powerful reminder of the resilience, innovation, and legacy of the farmers who help feed, fuel, and sustain our Commonwealth every day.

SB186 promotes transparency for consumers through clear food labeling, while SB522 strengthens Virginia's commitment to preserving working lands and supporting forest sustainability. Together, these bills represent an investment in the future of Virginia agriculture, from the food on our tables to the natural resources that sustain our communities.

Our farmers are the backbone of the Commonwealth. They rise before dawn, weather uncertainty, steward our land, and produce the food, fiber, and resources that keep Virginia moving forward. This is especially true for Black farmers, whose contributions have often been overlooked despite their lasting impact on our agricultural heritage and economy.

Thank you to Governor Spanberger for signing these important bills into law and to Pierce Farms for hosting such a meaningful event. This was about more than legislation, it was about honoring the people and industries that help make Virginia strong.

It was my honor to present the YMCA of South Hampton Roads with a Senate Resolution recognizing its extraordinary contributions to our region and commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the YMCA in the United States.

Presented during the YMCA’s Annual Prayer Breakfast, this resolution celebrates an organization that has spent generations strengthening our communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

From serving more than 255,000 individuals each year to providing millions in financial assistance and ensuring thousands of children have access to quality childcare, the YMCA continues to make a lasting impact across Hampton Roads.

Congratulations to the YMCA of South Hampton Roads on this incredible milestone, and thank you for 175 years of service, leadership, and commitment to building stronger communities. 💙

📣 Important Update: Together We Heal

Due to technical issues beyond our control, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2nd Annual Together We Heal event originally scheduled for June 13.

The good news is that the event is not canceled, just postponed! We are currently working to finalize a new date in August and look forward to bringing the community together for a day focused on health, healing, wellness, and support.

Yesterday, we celebrated the ceremonial signing of SB173, legislation that prohibits weapons in hospitals that provide mental health and developmental services.

This bill was years in the making and is a testament to what can happen when we remain committed to doing what is right, even when the path is not easy. Hospitals should be places of healing, hope, and safety, not fear. Patients, families, healthcare workers, and support staff deserve to know they can receive and provide care in a secure environment.

I am proud to have partnered with Delegate Phil Hernandez in support of this important legislation and grateful to Governor Spanberger for signing it into law.

Progress doesn’t always happen overnight, but persistence matters. Today, Virginia took an important step toward protecting our healthcare workers and the communities they serve. ❤️
