In continuing our efforts to inform during Elder Abuse Awareness Month series, the next few posts we are covering the often-overlooked forms of Neglect as a type of elder abuse.

Neglect is one of the most common and under-recognized forms of elder abuse. It can happen when an older adult’s basic needs are not being met. This includes safe living conditions, hygiene, medical care, nutrition, or daily support.

Neglect may look like:
• Unsafe or unsanitary living conditions
• Poor hygiene or unmet medical needs
• Limited access to food or proper nutrition
• Withdrawal or isolation from family, friends, and community

If you notice signs that something may not be right, you are not alone in speaking up. Concerns can be reported to Adult Protective Services (DARS) here: https://dars.virginia.gov/safety-security/file-a-report/

💜 For the next installment in our Elder Abuse Awareness Month series, we continue to share information about topics that can be difficult but are important to understand in order to protect older adults in our community.

If you are ever concerned about the safety of an older adult, you can file a report with Adult Protective Services (DARS): https://dars.virginia.gov/safety-security/file-a-report/

The topic for this week is abuse involving unwanted or non-consensual intimate acts toward an older adult. This can include unwanted touching, assault, or coerced nudity.

While these situations can be difficult to discuss, recognizing possible warning signs can help someone get the support they need. These may include:
• Unexplained bruises, fractures, or burns
• Torn or damaged clothing
• Fearfulness around certain caregivers or staff
• Ge***al injury, infection, or scarring
• Sudden changes in behavior or comfort with touch
• Inappropriate use of medications or sedation

Support is also available through RAINN’s National Hotline, which is free, confidential, and available 24/7 by phone, chat, or text: 800-656-HOPE(4673) or visit https://rainn.org/help-and-healing/hotline/
