This past Tuesday night several departments (Norfolk, Meadow Grove, Battle Creek, Hadar, Hoskins/Woodland Park) came together in Norfolk to do some grain bin rescue training. Several scenarios took place and multiple rescue techniques were used. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with our mutual aid partners. Teamwork at it's finest!

Burn Permit Update - 10/7/2026 - Good afternoon!! Conditions are becoming extremely dry as you all know. The weekend is fast approaching and it looks to bring excessive winds. We will CEASE issuing open burning permits effective immediately until further notice. We ask that everyone be careful and mindful of the conditions whether traveling or harvesting. If you have open burns that wrapped up recently, please consider covering/burying them if you have that option. STAY SAFE.

Between emergency calls today, B-Shift took advantage of the nice weather to sharpen their skills with specialized grain bin rescue training.

Grain bin rescues demand speed, precision, and seamless teamwork. Using Tower 1 as a high-point anchor, crews rappelled into the "bin," set up our grain rescue tube, and hoisted the "victim" to safety.

When someone is trapped in grain, the pressure makes it impossible to pull them out safely. Interlocking metal shields are placed around the victim to block the surrounding grain, allowing firefighters to scoop or vacuum out the inside material and lift them free.

đźš’ Charge into Fire Safety!

The Norfolk Fire Division is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® for Fire Prevention Week, focusing this year on “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, laptops, tools, e-bikes and scooters. Learn how simple charging habits can help prevent fires.

🔥 Remember to:
• Use the correct charger for your device
• Charge on a hard, flat surface — not on a bed or couch
• Stop using devices that are hot, swollen, smoking or have a strange smell
• Unplug devices when fully charged
• Charge larger batteries, such as those for e-bikes and scooters, outside and away from exits
