This past weekend, Top Hatters Sea Cadets Squadron had the privilege of supporting the Hampton Roads Naval Museum during their naval history and heritage event.

Our cadets were proud to serve the community through hands-on outreach—assisting with shipbuilding registration, leading arts and crafts stations, and engaging directly with attendees of all ages. Events like these allow our cadets to bring history to life while developing leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

During the event, our cadets also had the opportunity to meet Congresswoman Jen Kiggans, a strong supporter of youth development and our Sea Cadet program. We are grateful for her continued support and interest in the next generation of leaders.

The Naval Sea Cadet Corps and Navy League Cadet Corps are built on the values of service, citizenship, and personal growth. Opportunities like this not only strengthen our connection to naval heritage, but also reinforce our commitment to serving others.

Thank you to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum for hosting such a meaningful event and allowing our cadets to be a part of it.

Bravo Zulu to our cadets for representing the program with professionalism and pride!

⚓️ Commanding Officer Spotlight: ENS Ashton Pacheco (NSCC) ⚓️

Top Hatters Squadron is proud to highlight our Commanding Officer, Ashton Pacheco, whose journey reflects dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to the Sea Cadet program.

ENS Pacheco began his journey with Top Hatters as a cadet in 2015, graduating from the program in 2019. He continued his path of leadership at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he graduated in 2022. Shortly after returning to Virginia, he rejoined Top Hatters as a Division Officer—coming full circle to mentor the next generation.

In Fall 2025, he assumed the role of Commanding Officer, where he now leads the very unit that helped shape his foundation.

Outside of the program, ENS Pacheco works as an industrial HVAC service technician with Daikin Applied, servicing and maintaining critical systems for hospitals, military installations, schools, and other large-scale facilities.

His story is a testament to the lasting impact of the Sea Cadet program and the importance of giving back.

We’re proud to serve under his leadership and look forward to the continued growth of Top Hatters Squadron. ⚓️🇺🇸

⚓️ It’s PRT Season! ⚓️

This weekend, cadets of Top Hatters Squadron put their fitness, discipline, and determination to the test during the Physical Readiness Test (PRT).

From push-ups and planks to the mile run, cadets pushed themselves to meet and exceed Sea Cadets standards. The PRT is more than just a test—it’s a reflection of the commitment, resilience, and personal growth each cadet develops throughout their time in the program.

We’re proud of every cadet who stepped up, gave their best effort, and supported their shipmates along the way. Whether improving scores or completing their first PRT, each cadet demonstrated what it means to embody teamwork and perseverance.

Bravo Zulu to all hands!

Top Hatters Squadron families and supporters,

Since it's now been a week of being at the helm of the socials, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself as your new Public Affairs Officer, and put a face for the person "behind the camera"!

My name is Tyler Sabo. I serve as an Aerographer’s Mate in the United States Navy and as an Instructor with the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I joined Sea Cadets after being stationed at Naval Station Norfolk and recently marked one year of service in the U.S. Navy, and still pursue my passion for Military History.

Before joining the Navy, I was a teacher. When I left the classroom, I felt the absence of mentorship and leadership development in my life. Volunteering with Sea Cadets has allowed me to give back to the Navy while also filling that void — continuing to mentor, teach, and help young leaders grow.

As PAO, I’m excited to share the stories of our cadets, encourage pride in naval tradition, and highlight the hard work happening within Top Hatters Squadron so our families and community can follow along.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve in this role. I look forward to showcasing the professionalism, character, and achievements of our cadets.

Very respectfully,
Aerographers Mate Airman Tyler Sabo, USN | INST, NSCC

P.S. I also want to add that I am thankful for everyone else, including Active Duty, Reserve, and civilian volunteers who volunteer with this squadron and those who help with this page, as I couldn't do it alone. They help answer questions and more.

We asked Top Hatters why they joined the Sea Cadets! Why did you join the Sea Cadets? If you haven't, what will it take for you to join this great organization?

Last but certainly not least in our “Of the Year” recognitions, Top Hatters Squadron proudly recognizes Sherise Bourbeau as our Instructor of the Year.

Behind every successful cadet is a dedicated adult volunteer who gives their time, energy, and heart to the program. Through her commitment, mentorship, and steady leadership within the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Instructor Bourbeau has made a lasting impact on our cadets and our squadron.

Our adult volunteers are the backbone of Top Hatters Squadron. They invest countless hours to ensure our cadets are trained, mentored, and given every opportunity to succeed — and Instructor Bourbeau exemplifies that spirit of service.

Please join us in thanking and congratulating our Instructor of the Year!

Bravo Zulu, and thank you for all you do.
