I hope everyone out there is having a great week, and that you are getting out there and voting! The Lynden tribune reach out to Steve and I to get our thoughts heading into the election. If you weren’t able to pick up a copy or check it out online, here is what I put in the paper.
My name is Chris O’Day, and I feel like there needs to be a change made to our school board.
There are way too many people in our community who were unaware as to who was on the school board, what they did, or worse yet, that there even was one.
Finding out information about the board wasn’t easy, and you had to either know someone on the board or know exactly where to look to find out information about when they even met.
I want to help change that. Getting a measure of transparency out there into our community, so that those who are interested in what the school board does and where they meet are able to find out that information.
If we don’t know what’s going on with the board, what they are meeting about, or even when they are meeting, how do we know that the concerns and questions people have are being heard or addressed?
I want to fight for our schools. Helping everyone involved be more informed about the decisions that are made, and the type of change that is possible. My son started school this year at Nooksack. My daughter will in a few years. We should have people on the board who are involved with the school, who have the ear of what’s going on at the school, those that hear daily about issues or questions that arise.
If you aren’t around the school to know what’s going on, to hear about the concerns of the parents, and even the children at the school, then why should you be on the board?
Being an informed member of the community is important. If the community is your main focus though, there is a place for that, and it’s the city council.
We need people on our board who are focused on the school, and how that translates and relates to the families and children associated with it.
We should have a right to choose also. Learning and paying attention in school is hard enough. Doing so with a mask can be a big ask for some.
If your preferred method of learning, the one that works best for you, comes from seeing the range of emotions on a face, and seeing how words are formed, then that should be an option.
If you want to wear a mask to school, then that should be your choice as well. They’re our kids, and although they are going to a public school, we should still have a say in how they learn.
I want to fight for our schools, for our families, and for our children. To keep us all informed.
I love our schools and want to assist in continuing their improvement. I love the Valley and would appreciate the opportunity to take a role as a Nooksack Valley School Board member for District 2.
