For want of a brick…

Father José Peréz lamented the lack of construction on the church at Tumacácori in the early part of the new year of 1817. Peréz reported from San Ignacio Mission. “All of the missions have their decent churches. Eight of the churches are of stone, brick, and mortar, with domes of the same. The rest are decent, except that of Tumacacori, which years ago was begun of stone and brick and then the construction halted, perhaps because of the unfortunate insurrection.”

Tumacácori’s Franciscan church had been started in 1801 with the hiring of a construction crew. By 1803, the construction was winding down due to a lack of local funds. The building of the church was dependent on cattle and the cattle market was glutted. There is evidence that some piecemeal work was continued until 1807, and the church was left with walls between seven and eight feet tall.

The uprisings against Spain, starting in 1810 in Mexico, further distracted the government and the financial support of the religious orders and the northern frontier was severely reduced. Tumacácori’s resident priest, Narcisco Gutierrez had not even received a habit or underwear in the four years before Father Peréz’s report. Supplies were short and no stipend had been paid to the missionary for three years.

Gutierrez would not live to see the church built. He was buried in the old 1757 Jesuit church, now in poor shape. Eventually though, his body was relocated to the sanctuary in the mostly finished new church in 1822.

This one has such a wholesome vibe. At 82 years old, Rafael Aguirre just became one of Amarillo College’s most inspiring graduates. 🎓 The Mexican immigrant from Chihuahua spent decades working in agriculture, raising his family, and building a life in Texas before walking across the stage this May to earn a technical degree in HVAC systems.
