Members of Hamilton County Fire Fighters Local 4416 from the Westfield Fire Department were recently reunited with a cardiac arrest survivor from last summer.

A bicyclist suffered sudden cardiac arrest while riding through Cool Creek Park in Westfield. A bystander recognized the emergency, called 911, and immediately began CPR under a dispatcher's guidance until first responders arrived. Westfield Fire Fighters Local 4416 members arrived on scene quickly and provided advanced life support care, helping the patient have the best possible chance of survival and recovery.

Because of the fast response from the bystander, dispatcher, fire fighters, paramedics, and hospital staff, the patient survived and has made a remarkable recovery.

This powerful reunion is a reminder that anyone can help save a life. Hands-only CPR is easy to learn and can make a critical difference during a cardiac emergency. Consider taking a hands-only CPR class and be ready to help when every second counts.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, Carmel Professional Firefighters Local 4444 and Local 4416 are continuing the critical conversation around the long-term mental and physical health of fire fighters.

This week, members welcomed Drew Conner of Sharp Performance for a powerful discussion on fire fighter awareness, performance, and wellness. A former Green Beret, Drew led an educational session on what is often referred to as “Firefighter Syndrome” - the mental and behavioral impacts that can develop over years in the profession, including hyper-vigilance, sleep disruption, difficulty disconnecting from the job, and the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to stress and trauma.

Taking care of those who protect our communities means supporting both physical and mental wellness. Conversations like these help break the stigma and ensure fire fighters have the tools and support they need to stay healthy throughout their careers and beyond.
