Transparency should not depend upon whether candidates are comfortable with the questions they may be asked.
Just days ago, the Niskayuna Republican Committee said, “Transparency should not depend upon whether government officials are comfortable with what residents have to say.”
We agree.
Today, that same committee announced that it is declining an invitation to participate in the League of Women Voters’ October 14 candidate forum for Town Supervisor, citing concerns that include questions asked at last year’s forum.
We didn’t agree with every question last year either. Some went beyond the direct authority of town government. Our candidates said so, answered appropriately, and kept going.
That’s part of seeking public office.
You don’t have to like every question. You don’t have to agree with its premise. You can explain that an issue falls outside the authority of the office.
But transparency can’t mean “show up and answer questions” only when you’re the one demanding the answers.
One other point is worth noting: today’s announcement comes from the Republican Committee and quotes its chair. The release does not include a statement from the Republican candidate herself.
We hope she speaks for herself and chooses to participate.
Erin for Niskayuna Supervisor will be there, ready to answer voters’ questions.
Niskayuna voters deserve the opportunity to hear from both candidates.
